G'day people, this is my first post and I have only just found out about your awesome forum...I have a couple of questions about a 1985 $1 coin I have and wonder if anyone can shed some light on what the defect is and if it's actually worth anything other than it's face value? Not sure who to trust at present for a proper valuation... Any help will be much appreciated and looking forward to spending more time in this great site.. Thanks again, Povman.

I have had the coin soaking in olive oil for two weeks then dabbed it dry with cotton wool and the mark remains, so I'm pretty sure it's not pencil! And thanks for the welcomes and yes, I'm not trolling, unless I'm in my boat!

The options are either 1. Post Mint Damage 2. Some type of error or variety
I don't know of any variety or error like that, so that leaves post mint damage.

Get both the weight and diameter and post them here, so we can determine if the stats are correct for that coin. I'm inclined to go for PMD, in that someone has deliberately defaced both surfaces. Any other type of unintentional PMD that would result in this condition, would most likely only affect one side.

I believe this has been discussed before. Possibly on the ACBO, but I can't recall. I believe it not uncommon and have seen it before, certainly on 1984's.

Ok, I will board the train on this one.
I notice that the 'line' does not touch the relief of the coin at all. Sure is a strange one.

A lot of 1984 and 85 well circulated $1 coins have this trait, nothing special or unique

I found one of these today. My photos aren't as good as this so I won't bother posting now. T thought it was pencil but under microscope is doesn't look like it. Quote: A lot of 1984 and 85 well circulated $1 coins have this trait, nothing special or unique . If it's common, what is it?

Probably heavily used when they are put in the cab coin holder or supermarket trolley coin holder - the inner ring damage seems pretty consistent to lots of other coins that I see.

I posted about these before and was told it is from the rolling machines. I hope they were not wrong about this as I think it went back into the ocean...

Gecko I've put 4-5 of these back into circulation, I don't think they are anything. I hope not anyway, I will keep the next one I see just incase.
