I've posted before about the model used for the Battle of Gettysburg 75th Anniversary Half Dollar - James Power Sankey of Pittsburgh - you can read it here:

- 1936 Battle Of Gettysburg 75th Anniversary - Sculptor's Model

I recently came across a press photo from the Pennsylvania State Commission (the coin's sponsor) that presents the coin's designer/sculptor Frank Vittor and his coin model James Sankey having a look at draft designs for the half dollar. As noted in the image's caption, Sankey was 90 at the time he posed for Vittor, but his rugged features worked well on the coin.

That old photo is a fun find!

There appears to be a profile photo of Mr. Sankey on the easel to the right of the plaster models.

This provides for an interesting perspective - my eyes can scan from Mr. Sankey himself (albeit wearing glasses), to the profile photo (with cap) to the plaster model.

The cap Mr. Sankey is wearing in the profile photo appears similar to the one worn by the Confederate soldier represented on the coin.

I suspect Mr. Vittor also had a profile photo with Mr. Sankey wearing the hat of the Union soldier.

It is indeed, and one of my favorites in the series.

One of the most treasured coins in my circulated classic silver commemorative type set is a honestly worn and somewhat beat up Gettysburg half.

This well worn coin is evocative of the damage done at the battle and also of the tenacity of the men who survived to keep carrying on.

See for yourself:

As Classic U. S . Commemoratives go,

IMO, This 1936 Gettysburg Commemorative Half is an Awesome example of the " Classic " Definition Itself , in the series.

David, Excellent Observation on the Cap topic.

David stated, "
I suspect Mr. Vittor also had a profile photo with Mr. Sankey wearing the hat of the Union soldier. ". I Would agree, Its Almost a Surety, ....( maybe Commems Can locate the Picture). ....
