I bought a couple of boxes of bank pennies. I am wondering if stopping production of the coin may make some low mintage's.

Mintage numbers--of cents already produced--will not be reduced by halting the production of 'future' cents.

Maybe a lower mintage for 2025, but tens of millions have already been cut loose from Denver and Philadelphia.

Specifically, 160 million 2025-P and 82.4 million 2025-D have already been cut loose.

Nope. I will take what I will get from the annual sets this year and call it a wrap.

I can hear the sales pitch on the late night TV coin peddling shows already - "For only $49.99 you can have the last cent that will ever be minted. Rolls are available too"

They might recall the pennies for proper disposal. If they do the new ones will be the first melted.

Recalls are complicated by the melting ban but this can be repealed quickly if the coins are recalled and banks wouldn't issue them any longer, just return them to the FED.

I'd hate to see 40 or 50 billion pennies end up in landfill which is what would happen if the right thing isn't done. Just consider the costs 'moral hazard'.

Most people forget that zinc is highly toxic to all mammals and a penny contains enough to kill and 18lb or lighter mammal including babies and toddlers.

There are plenty out there now to satisfy normal collector demand. No need to panic but the 2025's are probably something to watch. They indeed could be the last ones made (hopefully). I suspect boxes will be on ebay soon for $100+.....then in a few months it will die down.

I think some good copper mining is coming. People will start to roll them up and take them to the bank in fear of demonetization. I don't think the government will demonetize right away. It will be years down the road.

Meanwhile we can mine away and leave just the Zincolns for an eventual alloy recovery program.

As far as I know, the US has never demonetized any of its coins. A 3 cent silver is still legal tender if you care to spend any.

My opinion, based on what I think I know...

The cent will never be demonetized. As stated above even Three Cents coins are still legal tender. People will remain free to use or refuse them as they do now.

The cent will never be recalled. This will incur additional costs, not to mention a question of who will foot the bill—the Treasury, the Federal Reserve, or the banks? Good luck getting any of them to cooperate. Besides, wasteful costs are what we are trying to avoid by getting rid of the cent.

We will have to see how the supply holds up. If they are taking up space in vaults, I am sure they will want to return them upstream. But I do not imagine people rushing to turn them in. Cents have, for a long time, taken a one way trip: Mint > Fed > Banks > People > Trash.

That being said, I believe the only 2025 cents at risk of being destroyed are the ones that have not yet left the Mint.

Again, my opinions. I reserve the right to be 100% incorrect.

Only time will tell.

I think many will get recycled. In six months there will be no call for pennies at the bank and these will trickle back to the banks for many years. The FED won't get many back but what they do will be melted.

In four years a new President could order cents to be made again for the good of all Americans, an honored tradition.....
