from the RAM website: Change is coming. This morning, Andrew Leigh and Leigh Gordon announced that the portrait of His Majesty King Charles III will grace the obverse of all new Australian coins. The effigy was designed by Dan Thorne from The Royal Mint in the UK and was approved by His Majesty King Charles III. This has been a complex task and required highly specialised skills spanning design, engineering, engraving and tool-making. The Royal Australian Mint is approaching the conclusion of trials and prototyping and will shortly enter full scale manufacturing of the $1 circulating coin with the new effigy. The Mint intends on manufacturing 10 million of these $1 coins, which will commence going into the banks and into the economy close to December this year. The Mint will progressively update the five other circulating coin denominations through 2024. The Mint will also commence application of the new effigy onto our Collectible and Investment coins early into 2024.

ABC news article: https://www.abc.net.au/news/2023-10...ra/102936920RAM freshly modified FAQ page: https://www.ramint.gov.au/news-medi...ed-questionsIt's interesting the choice of the Dan Thorne portrait. I saw the "DT" initials on the artwork and wondered who that was. As far as I can tell, this portrait isn't being used in Britain itself (which is still using the Martin Jennings portraits announced last year - Dan Thorne designed the reverses of their recent commemoratives). This will mark the first time that Britain and Australia have deviated from sharing official portrait usage on coinage (apart from the one-off VG portrait back in 2000). I'm also wondering which portrait (Charles III or QEII Memorial) is going to be used on the 2024 mint and proof sets. If they were following standard RAM procedure, those sets should have already have been manufactured by now. While I'm disappointed we haven't chosen an Australian artist for our royal portrait, I suppose choosing a British one was faster. Canada's still in the process of choosing a Canadian artist for their coinage portrait and probably won't have any Charles III coins ready for 2023.

It would be logical to think that Dollar coins, if they are struck and issued into circulation in 2023, then they should have a 2023 date.
All other denominations to follow would have a 2024 date but it would be nice to think that just a few of all other denominations could also be issued into circulation with a 2023 date, for the sake of scarcity, to the interest of collectors

The authorization comes from the government, and covers all legal tender coinage issued in the name of Australia - whichever mint is contracted to produce it. So yes, that would include Perth Mint and RAM coinage (and any other mint that might hypothetically be contracted or subcontracted to produce Australian coins). Whether the Perth Mint (or for that matter the RAM) has rights to use it for flag-of-convenience coinage "from" other countries like Tuvalu or Uganda, would depend on a separate licensing agreement between the artist/copyright holder of the portrait and the Mint in question (or the government of the flag-of-convenience country).

The anticipation of new releases is what the RAM relies on. Will the 2023 Charlie $1 be low mintage? Will the 2024 Charlie $1 be even lower? Maybe an all coloured 2024 set? The suspense is money making. until the real mintages are proven. Or in fact that the new release of $1 Charlie will have a 2023 date on it at all ,maybe a 2024 date.?

I read that the 2023 $1 Charlie has a mintage of 10,000,000. Thats a lot. Release before Christmas....... = 24 days left. My money is on another "Themed' $1 coin for the 2024 UNC and proof sets.

Not too impressed with any of the effigies of Charles III (on coins) so far. My personal rating: 1: British (Martin Jennings 2: Australia (Dan Thorne) 2: Canada: (Steven Rosati)

Not yet seen a 2023 Australian One Dollar coin bearing the effigy of KC 111.
It was officially announced that an Australian 2023 dated $1 coin bearing KC111 effigy would be issued into circulation. All other denominations would be issued later, and have a 2024 date.
It seems to me that although 2023 $1 KC111 coins have been struck, but will not be released into circulation, until required by the retail banks.

If the banks are wanting to go cashless, would there be many 2024 dated coins minted for circulation? I think the only 2023 dated coins released for circulation were the junk coins for Woolworths and Australia Post. Perhaps we are about to see the end of the standard designs minted for circulation? Maybe very few, if any, King C effigy coins will be circulation coins (I kind of hope so). Interesting times ahead.
