2019 $1 Reverse Debuts
2019, January 6

The new $1 coin reverse is alledged to be a tribute to native americans in the space program. It appears that you can call this a tribute to any people you want to see it in this reverse. (kinda generic IMHO)

Mary Golda Ross on the reverse is kinda specifically Native American.

Edit to add: Not having her name there, though, does make it appear rather generic.

cant really tell its an astronaut unless you really inspect it. Its also very busy... I like it, but I wish it was cleaner/clearer and more simple.

Rant:

I do not care for any of the "golden dollars" - I don't like the color, the size, the weight, or the designs - and this latest coin reinforces my disinterest. While I'm up in arms, let me add that I do not care for the flood of themed coins (state quarters, Presidential dollars. nickels, pennies etc.). The designs are generally fine - but they belong on commemorative coins or medals, not circulating coins.

FWIW: I'm not opposed to change (punny), I just don't need 5 or 10 new designs each year. I would have kept the SBA dollar, but I would have made it a tad bigger or thicker to differentiate it it from the quarter.

/Rant.

"In the field behind, a group of stars indicates outer space." says a US Mint article. Couldn't they have at least made it a recognizable constellation or star group? It's a NASA-related coin! and it's just some random star-like thingies? Every Native American tribe in North America probably has a legend/myth surrounding the Pleiades, so depicting them would have evoked all kinds of stuff, like going from the traditional people's stories about the stars to people actually going there, 15,000 year arc of history type stuff... but no, we get 11 random star-ish features which "indicates outer space". Forgive me if there was some secret true intent behind this feature that isn't readily found, but jeez. I guess I went on a rant there. Sorry.

But isn't that the Pleiades on the coin, at least those on the left? Rotate this about 60 degrees counter-clockwise and it's roughly the same pattern.

The Pleiades are the seven sisters, seven brothers, seven puppies, etc in most native mythology. Even if that's supposed to be the five main stars, it's backwards on the coin, and I'd think if there was some "intent" there, it would be in the mint descriptions. Missed opportunity. Traditionally, every element on coins typically is meant to symbolize something. This just looks like a bunch of random birds to me. Sorry for being so critical.

I rotated my image 52 degrees counter-clockwise and labeled the stars. It's not backwards, it's the Pleiades, but only the stars between the rocket and the astronaut. I can't explain the other two stars to the lower-right.

It's not the worst design every, but that is a low bar to get over. It reminds me of the Florida State Quarter with just a bunch of random stuff thrown together.

The idea was good but poorly executed as usual

It looks like the astronaut is hanging off the side of the dollar, about to fall off a cliff. But I guess he's supposed to be sitting? Odd coin. And I hate there is no name.

OK Alpha, I give. Maybe it's the worst rendition of the Pleiades ever, good on them for trying, because the symbolism is cool. Why they would choose to not make it recognizable is a bit dumb in my opinion, because doing it like this image below, with 7 stars, in an orientation people are used to, then everyone would "get it" right away. And if that was really the intent then say so in press releases. I do applaud them for honoring the people who really put men on the moon - the scientists.

In fairness, I didn't recognize the Pleiades either until you mentioned it. I imagine it's rotated on the coin because it wouldn't fit with the "proper" orientation, among the other design elements. Even so, this layout is clearer than the original design as considered among the other candidates. I'm guessing the other two stars were added just to have something in that area of the field. (Among other changes, the equation is different and the astronaut is moved clockwise, probably to provide more room for the Pleiades.

I also like it. I have always like the idea of dollar coins. I would like to see more of them.

I originally thought this was an innovation dollar, but it makes sense that those replaced the Presidential dollars, and the Native American dollars will still continue as they did when the Presidential dollars came out.
