I found this bogus quarter in a ticket machine's change tray. It was so heavily damaged that I thought it was real but it rings flat, giving it away as fake. The edge of this "coin" is copper colored, but the coin clearly isn't copper.

Not really sure who would go through this much trouble to fake a quarter.

Not a fake.
Ringing such a damaged coin is not a reliable indicator of anything.

It's just a damaged quarter - and possibly also a dug coin.

to the CCF

It's a genuine quarter that has been heavily damaged and corroded.

Agree with all above--legit, badly damaged quarter (been around the block a few times). I've seen worse over many, many years of coin roll hunting.

Looks like it may have been in a dump fire, or something like that.

While I see where you guys are coming from, as I thought that the coin was legitimate when I originally found it, I remain unconvinced.

This hunk of metal sounds like a Magician's coin when dropped on a hard surface, which raises huge red flags for me, because I have plenty of badly mangled quarters which all still ring when dropped.

If it is indeed genuine, perhaps it has been chemically altered through a process such as being dipped in acid? The copper on the edge seems to be eaten away at in one location.

to CCF.

looks real enough for me, but I don't have it in hand to examine - a real test would be the weight of it.

to the CCF Acid damage will affect the characteristics of the metal. Just an acid damaged coin with impact damage.
