I've been criticized over the years by several members, including at least one Moderator, for referring new questioners to other sites for info (or at least our own Search box) before asking pedestrian questions here on this broad forum.

Your thoughts?

What I think, is I think someone should try researching their coin for answers first, then post it on here if they can't find an answer.

For me it matters whether this is someone's first few posts here or their hundredth.

I'm with you coinfrog. The same basic questions can be easily resolved with some research.

If nothing else, doing so will lead to asking better questions.

I try not so speak on any forum without making sure my question is not a no-brainer. I mean, who wants to appear uninformed?

But I find an increasing number of threads here, often by repeat posters, that seem woefully lacking in any effort to have even tried gathering information from other sources.

Many of them ask the same questions over and over without any suggestion they have learned a whit from prior replies.

Okay, it's just my beef.

I never raised my hand in grade school if I didn't have at least some idea of the right answer.

Interesting conundrum. While individuals are encouraged to do some basic research ahead of posting, how would research-first 'gate keeping' on this forum be accomplished? Should new members be shunted through a rigid if/then decision tree before they are granted permission to post? Or, are those who desire to post just remined/encouraged up front via a friendly splash page to do some work on their own before proceeding? Repeat offenders (always taking the easy path) could be given pushups, or demerits....

I get it.

I just think a staggering amount of time is spent on this forum answering endlessly silly and repetitive questions.

I'd just like to see an editorial effort here to discourage this kind of thing.

OK, it won't happen.

It's the society we live in...I feel some new members are here for the "strike it rich" reason and not looking at this as a true hobby (studying coins and the history behind each) most want instant satisfaction, it's the times they grew up in with a computer that fits in their pocket...Remember the days of encyclopedias (I do) and how about Mom/Dad "how do you spell --------" reply was "Look it up in the dictionary" we were taught to do the work and show your work....Heck now a days I don't even have to spell word correctly because there is automatic spell check.

I would love it if new members would at least read through the glossary. Maybe have hidden questions within and when they are answered right or wrong new members would get a different level of their title (ie pillar of com./ valued member...ect)

There are just as many lazy answerers as lazy questioners IMO. More interested in raising their post count than helping the OP. Particularly when they believe the topic or question is "beneath" them.

Perhaps a page for New Members for advice before posting with examples of some of the most common questions, like examples of parking lot coins, vise jobs, brown 'dug' cupro-nickel coins, the fact that ' no mint mark' means Philadelphia. Unfortunately many beginners' research may consist of looking at overpriced coins being offered on ebay and some of the ridiculous videos on TikTok or YouTube...

We should just be answering the question, not sending new members to other sites. Period. It's the entire mission of the group.
