Found the following posted within a coin community we evidently can't link to. Mods -- Please move this topic to a better location if needed. This is a portion:

This is post #14 in a multipart series intended to help members (and drive-by authors) make the most of our sub. Each post in the series is focused on a single issue we regularly see in posts. Our purpose is to offer suggestions on how not to annoy everyone and how to get better responses and engagement from our other members. Today's topic is: Do Your Research.

Rule #9: "Do your own research before posting" - Low-effort posts will be removed. Your question may be removed for failing to do minimal research, failing to read the pinned How-to post, FAQ, "Frequent Coin List", or "What's up with my coin?". Please don't consider this criticism or punishment - it is our intent to keep the feed free of questions which can be easily answered by the author prior to posting. If you aren't sure whether you should post, please reach out to the mod team for guidance.

What exactly do we mean by "do your research"?

First, it means not being lazy. It is clear to most of us when a user has put zero effort into identifying their coin or trying to ascertain its value.

It came from Reddit, via the coins subreddit, under FAQs on the right side of the 'panel'.. All kinds of 'guidelines'.

I follow the r/coins subreddit (forum) on Reddit.

There are a lot of clickbait type articles on the internet that make people think that they can find ultra-rare coins in pocket change - "this penny could be worth thousands if you know what to look for" (they don't, and these coins are mostly not out there even if they did).

There are tons of fakes people buy or even find on the ground that get asked about - 1804 Dollar (15 known to exist) comes up a lot.

There are apps that massively over grade and over value common coins.

So there are a lot of posts along the lines of "I found this the other day, so do I have what I think I have?", along with a picture of a circulated 1968-D Lincoln Cent. This coin is worth $15,000 in MS69 after all. Well, sorry, yours is worth 1c.

Most of the answers are just a Google search away.

It does get old after awhile but people for the most part are pretty nice about it. I guess there's a lot of people hoping to find treasure out there.

So true. The same thing is playing out on every coin forum, probably for the reasons mentioned upthread.
I think there is a personality type that thinks that normal rules of probabilities and statistics do not apply to them... Or they just prefer not to look at life that way.
