Nice!

I know we're already on 1644, but I promised to post mine and miscounted the date...

Note the Livonian legend and arms, and the debased billon composition (looking almost like the silver-coated Roman coins).

Here is a 4 Pfennig from the German town of Coesfeld dated 1644 AD:

That 1/48 ecu is super! The mass is about the same as these billon solidi we've been seeing, but of course higher value due to the silver content (I wonder what a solidus bought in Riga?)

. Nice coin! I have one in a few days with this same appearance ... but others have a sort of uniform gray-brown color

@arkie, based on when you posted that solidus, maybe you've already done the research, but it looks like the legends on your coin narrow the date range to 1645-47 (if the lettering variants in Numista are reasonably complete).

No, it just looked like the ones being posted.

Also, I love your photo of the page where that coin originated. Do the empty spots reflect YOUR cherrypicking, or someone who got to it before you? (and the one at the lower left looks pretty nice)

Yes, my cherrypicking. By the way, the page is two sheets of plastic bound by staples.

I just saw where I had a dated 1649 solidus.

France 1644, louis d'or, Louis XIV, Paris (A).

Towards the other end of the denomination spectrum, this louis d'or was valued at 10 livres (160 times more than the 1/48 écu). Louis XIV is very young on this coin, having become king in 1643 at the age of 5.

France 1643, écu, Louis XIV, Paris (A).

The first écu with the new king. Louis XIV ascended the throne in 1643, 5 years old, after his father, Louis XIII, died from tuberculosis at the age of 41. One écu was valued at 3 livres. With that you could buy 6 kilos of beef or one pheasant, depending on what you fancied .

An écu weighs 27.45 g with a fineness of 917/1000. It was minted together with a number of fractionals: 1/2, 1/4, 1/8, 1/12, 1/24 and 1/48 of an écu, all with the same fineness. The two lowest denominations became impractically small and were minted only for a few years. To give you an idea, here are the largest (40 mm) and smallest (12.5 mm) of the coins side by side:

Nice! The S L on either side of the bust identifies him as Saint Lucius, patron saint of Chur. Lucius was an early bishop of Chur, but there was also a legendary early King Lucius of Britain, and the two are conflated in the saint's iconography.

@erafjel, it's been a fun pass through the French denominations... I will go a bit lower with a 1643 double tournois with Louis XIII (you've answered my question on whether both kings show up this year). As an aside, it's the only French royal I kept after rationalizing my collection to just a few themes. Acquired at Les Puces in Paris on my first visit, 1980.

Nice Flea Market copper piece, @tdziemia.

Here is the last écu with the old king then.

France 1643, écu, Louis XIII, Paris (A).

The first silver écus are minted in 1641, as part of the monetary reform that introduces the new louis d'or as well as the écu d'argent in place of the old écu d'or and fractional silver écus. The silver écu was made to correspond to the internationally accepted thaler.

Though, as you mentioned, not even so old, at 41.

I also have the twin of @pepactonius' solidus from Swedish Livonia, Riga city mint:

Nice coins, everyone! And heavy on Sweden and France, nice

France 1642, écu d'or, Louis XIII, Paris (A).

The new type of coins, the louis d'ors, were minted from 1640 but the old gold écus continued to be minted until 1654. While the louis d'ors (and écu d'argents) had a fineness of 917/1000, the écu d'or used the older standard 958/1000. An écu d'or had a gold content slightly above that of ˝ louis d'or. Another difference was that the louis d'ors and écu d'argents were all minted using mechanical presses, while écu d'ors up until 1640 were all hammered. This particular écu d'or is minted in Paris, one of few mints using the new mechanized technique also for the old type of coins.
