TIL! I just thought that (the free city of) Riga was a separate authority from the rest of Livonia and consequently had separate coinage, much like the separate coinages of Danzig (consistently) and Elbing and Torun (occasionally) within Poland itself.

Maybe two ways of saying the same thing? I think the cities of the Hanseatic League were granted rights (such as coining) from the Holy Roman Emperor. That covers Riga, Danzig and ELbing. Torun I think is different, and just passed from Prussia to Poland in 1500s . (Edit - Maybe I mixed that up with the free imperial cities ).

I have a coin from Livonia photographed, but it's dated 1645, so wouldn't show up for a few more days. It looked slightly debased, so I thought it was one of the Moldavian (Suceava mint) issues, but it doesn't look that debased, so apparently it's probably real - good to know!

My coins from Livonia in this era vary from "coppery" (see my post for 1649) to "silvery" appearance which also made me wonder if all are authentic. I say if nobody cries "FAKE" when we post them, then we're good!

Really attractive Austrian coin @spence!

. There is something unsettling about a laureate bust of a 9-year old Louis XIV.

For 1646, a more mature sovereign on the 1/2 ducaton of the Duchy of Brabant, Philip IV of Spain. He was the uncle of Louis XIV (Philip's older sister, Anne of Austria, was Louis' mother).

I'm back to Austria for today. Here is another 3 Kreuzer, but the mint is Hall and the date is 1645 AD:

@arkie, based on when you posted that solidus, maybe you've already done the research, but it looks like the legends on your coin narrow the date range to 1645-47 (if the lettering variants in Numista are reasonably complete).
Also, I love your photo of the page where that coin originated. Do the empty spots reflect YOUR cherrypicking, or someone who got to it before you? (and the one at the lower left looks pretty nice)

I open up 1644 with a real tiny piece of silver.

France 1644, 1/48 écu, Louis XIV, Paris (A).

This tiny coin weighs 0.57 g and is 12.5 mm across. There is no smaller coin minted in France since and I think one has to go back to medieval obols to find one of lower weight*. Having the same silver fineness as the écu (917/1000) and valued at only 15 deniers, it couldn't be any larger. Despite its small size, it was not a completely insignificant coin - it would buy a pound of bread or a few eggs. It was minted only 1642-44 and probably wasn't very popular - it must have been really easy to lose.

Look here for a size comparison with a dime!

* The Béarnaise vaquettes (3/4 denier) can have smaller diameter, but are on average slightly heavier.
