Maybe two ways of saying the same thing? I think the cities of the Hanseatic League were granted rights (such as coining) from the Holy Roman Emperor. That covers Riga, Danzig and ELbing. Torun I think is different, and just passed from Prussia to Poland in 1500s  . (Edit - Maybe I mixed that up with the free imperial cities ). Quote:

Here's a Riga solidus that I have which lacks a date.   This is a sheet of solidi that was sold to me by the LCS for a dollar.  |

OK! time for 1645! I bought this coin back in 1983 when I lived in Wales. paid £20 for it at the time. Charles I shilling, struck at the Tower mint under Parliament, mm sun (1645-6). Please ref this [age for age determination: http://www.leodishammeredcoins.co.u...ducts_id=166  |

@arkie, based on when you posted that solidus, maybe you've already done the research, but it looks like the legends on your coin narrow the date range to 1645-47 (if the lettering variants in Numista are reasonably complete).
Also, I love your photo of the page where that coin originated. Do the empty spots reflect YOUR cherrypicking, or someone who got to it before you? (and the one at the lower left looks pretty nice)

I open up 1644 with a real tiny piece of silver.  France 1644, 1/48 écu, Louis XIV, Paris (A).  This tiny coin weighs 0.57 g and is 12.5 mm across. There is no smaller coin minted in France since and I think one has to go back to medieval obols to find one of lower weight*. Having the same silver fineness as the écu (917/1000) and valued at only 15 deniers, it couldn't be any larger. Despite its small size, it was not a completely insignificant coin - it would buy a pound of bread or a few eggs. It was minted only 1642-44 and probably wasn't very popular - it must have been really easy to lose. Look here for a size comparison with a dime! * The Béarnaise vaquettes (3/4 denier) can have smaller diameter, but are on average slightly heavier.Edited by erafjel
