Good point @j1m. @jbuck, when you have a free minute, can you please update the title of this thread to reflect that we are looking for a coin from the decade of the 460s? Thx!

Been too long since this thread was bumped. We are looking for a coin minted in the decade of the 460s AD.

I certainly don't have one but Libius Severus ruled entirely in the 460s. There are also apparently some rare dated early Peroz I drachms (also don't have any) - Other than that, Leo and Skandagupta ruled during this time, but produced no dated coinage.

Yes good point @finn. Looks like Anthemius, who ruled from 467 to 472 AD would also work. Too bad everything I'm seeing is well outside my price range. Also, when you get a free minute, can you please pop on over to the v2.0 of this thread as we could use your help there...Thx!

Skandagupta did produce some dated coinage that can be seen in some of his Madhyadesha or Peacock type drachms. The date is in front of the ruler's face unlike the coins of the Western Satraps where it is behind the head. Coins dated between GE 140-147 would fall in the 460s decade. Unfortunately I don't own any of these rarer types although they were offered for purchase before.

That's really interesting, can you give me a link?

There's an example depicted here, which I suspect is likely the one Neil666 was referring to. They don't seem to be very common with legible dates, even compared to the general scarcity of the type, but this appears to be another such example.

Nice one @neil--do you own this coin? If so, we can move the thread back a decade.

I wish I did, but sadly that isn't the case. Apologies if that means we'll be stuck in the 460s for some time to come.

I know the seller - the coin is for sale for $180 - any takers? If I get one of the type, it will be cheaper and have better reverse details than that one.
I have a dated Kumaragupta coin coming, can't remember the date but that might help with the 450s which will be equally tough. If we can get to the 420s it'll be smooth sailing until the classical Greek era!

Quote: the 450s which will be equally tough 450s are easy: Marcian. Remember that we don't require a dated coin, just one with a sufficiently narrow date range. 440s and 430s might be trickier. I think a dated Kumaragupta coin would probably fall in one of those though.
