While noodling to try and complete a set of the Great Aussie Hunt A-Z coins I came across this 1991 MOR $1 coin. This came as a surprise because I'd always thought that no $1 coins had been produced in 1989, 1990 and 1991 as is stated on the Royal Australian Mint website: I did a bit of googling and found that even though this coin was never released into circulation apparently you could mint this coin yourself, as well as being available purchase in a mint set at the time. Has anyone else come across this coin in the wild? Edited by coaster 07/30/2020 12:29 am

comes from a mint set or something that wasnt minted for circulation including 1989 and 1990, the only one that actually doesn't exist is the 1992 MOB.

Quote: the only one that actually doesn't exist is the 1992 MOB I'm fairly sure that I read that someone purchased one of these through Downies a few years back?

yes that's what it says on Australian coin blog, and the auction details from "Downies" just says 1992 observer stuck on a Mob planchet. What this is no one knows as there isn't any image. Royal Australian Mint also doesn't know (as far as I know, never asked).

The 1991 dollar would be either a mint your own or from a broken set - I've never found a 1991 dollar myself but most NCLT I find are dollar coins.
The 1992 mob of roos dollar was sold earlier in the year I thought? Or maybe it was last year. Anyway, there were images in the Coin and Banknote magazine and there are also pictures on the internet too.

I did find a 1989 MOR coin in circulation which must have come from a broken set.
