I read somewhere that the 2020 $1 Qantas coin was only released to collectors at RAM events before Covid 19 hit and that it is NCLT. Am thinking of buying one online as I suspect they will never turn up in circulation in sufficient numbers to have a chance of finding one (let alone in good condition). Is this correct and the best course of action? Would be interested in your views.

David, I was under the impression that they were going into circulation, but I could be wrong. Don't pay silly money on ebay for one though. If you don't find one. let me know, I still have 3 unopened bags from the RAM events.

Hi Steve,

Looking at the RAM website:
"The Mint anticipates releasing five million of these coins into circulation from February 2020."

Oddly, it is now September and I haven't seen one in circulation and all the ebay listings are from mint bags. Maybe they never reached Qld. Will hold off on the ebay trigger for the time being. May take you up on your offer down the track!

And if none of the 5 million Qantas coins reached circulation then what chance do the 4.5million donation dollars have?

I suspect that RAM are going to release them into general circulation, however due to Covid 19 they stop producing them and left them in the bank vaults (and know them they just might misplace them ;) ). So any that can be found can only be from RAM 2020 swap. As you can see on ebay they are priced pretty highly at 30ish dollars per bag. I did sell a few at the start then gave up, however I traded a few bags for coins that I want which was good :).

If you really can't get some message me.

@ryurazu - Given that Covid-19 probably wont be over by the end of the year I wonder if they'll get released in 2021. They will deninitely be backwards time travelling coins!! Also, no sign of the 5 million donation dollars in circulation either. That's 9 million coins have been too shy to appear in circulation. Also wonder why RAM minted 5 million donation dollars when they haven't yet released 4.5 million Qantas dollars.

COVID-19 has drastically reduced demand for cash. The mint might have "anticipated" making that many $1 coins, but if we don't need them there's nothing the Mint can do about it. The Mint can't produce what the Treasury doesn't order them to make, and if they have already been made, then the Mint can't issue what the Reserve Bank doesn't request to be shipped.

@SAP - So maybe the qantas and donation coins will increase a lot in value if mintages end up being much lower than first anticipated.

David, I hope you didn't buy one. They are turning up in circulation in large numbers now in SEQ.
