Nothing to get in a fuss over. There should be book somewhere on how to run diagnostics to determine if its a proof or not. It wouldn't be the first time NGC has misidentified a proof. Just saying.

I have bought a couple of coins from Julian, but now I just pass on any coin that he has for sale. He is very knowledgeable about coins, but I do not care for his tactics on selling coins.

That coin has been discussed around here before (I think).
He has his opinion and everybody else has one, too. In my opinion it's a 10$ coin.
At 20k$ I don't think it's going to go anywhere anytime soon.

Part of Julian's business plan is to sell coins with nice eye appeal that have a details grade of cleaning, scratched, or questionable color and ask for the straight grade price with best offer because he disagrees the the TPG grade. He also likes to find coins that have been cracked out and graded lower and try to sell at the original pre cracked grade because he disagrees with the lower grade. Selling the OP proof is just part of the way he sells coins. These tactics are the modern version of the snake oil salesman. He is leveraging for profit the knowledge that anyone who has sent coins in for grading has most likely disagreed with some of the grades. |

ebay allows him to walk a thin line on his listing title because of who he is. ebay does not enforce the rules the same for everybody. Been that way a long time.

I have 8 or 9 of the 1892 & 1893 Columbian Exposition Half Dollars. Maybe if I polish them I can get this ebayer to buy them for like $6000 each then he can sell them for $19000 each. It would be a win win.   Edited by jst1dreamr

the coin in the listing doesn't look polished to me from the pictures. i agree with the seller's assessment about the TPG being wrong. i don't know if the coin as a proof - seller is entitled to his opinion. he can sell coins for whatever price he wants - it's a free market. i don't see anything wrong with the listing. if the buyer of a $20k coin bases the purchase solely on the seller's opinion, buyer is a fool. |

The only thing I see wrong and misleading is using the words "Proof" and "NGC" in the same sentence in the listing title. To me it implies that NGC slabbed the coin as a details proof. Only after reading the full description does it become clear as to what exactly is being offered.
