Hi everyone.

I received this Spanish Colonial 8-Reales from an veteran auctioneer,
Carolus-IIII Mo 1802 FT, apparently around VF or VF+ condition.

It's a relatively white coin, with some dark patches on the obverse, right below the left of the chin of the bust.

I also find the dentils not sharp and prominent, although the overall obverse portrait and shield (on the reverse) with good details. I can find the rim having the two overlaps, but apparent cleaning makes it very shinny.

Weight is 26.93 grams.

I would appreciate if you can post your expert opinions and authenticity check.

Reverse Side :

I also noticed some blobs on top of the left pillar. The legend on the periphery has is relatively rough.

Edge / rim's view :

I posted two photos of the obverse and reverse with different lighting angles.

How about the authenticity of the coin?

Are these evidence of casting or just a worn-out die on some areas?

Impression at the legend near the 'DEI GRATIA', as well as the black patches

A close up of the blobs on the reverse side.

Need your help to settle this. Maybe I can still return the coin if these are casting evidences.

Thanks.

Does not look good. The surfaces and the edge.
A few thinks like blobs may be mint artifacts or die corrosion effects. But those by the pillar are too big and round. The flux by the edge also bad.

But if cast copy why damage it? How odd.

After consulting a number of Spanish colonial experts, they said that the coin in authentic, except that it was once corroded, as evident on pitting on the rim side of the legends, but was heavily cleaned.

Those by the pillar are big blobs. It had to be a very corroded die. But it is possible. Not a corroded coin but the die used to make it. I have seen coins from the same era coming from corroded dies, they caused those portions looking like extra metal. Corrosion made rough surfaces and holes in the dies.
