I was wondering if there is an advantage from an optical point of view of storing small (< 20 mm diameter) coins in either white or black coin flips (2x2). Are small coins "more visible" in white or black flips, or is there no apparent difference?

I think the coin's composition (plus apparent lightness/darkness) and the lighting under which it is viewed make the most difference.

I'm not the OP but I recently came across a bunch of them used for proofs. They did look kinda interesting though I don't think I'll start using them any time soon.

Very interesting. A full album using black flips would probably look really nice.

Please note the OP. When I get a chance, I will photograph a white and black coin flip contains a small copper or silver-colored coin, so we can determine what looks best.

Very interesting. I could use some black flips. Might grab some to see how they 'present' various coins.

To me, it seems that contrast works best between coin and flip. For example, a silver coin in a white coin flip is not as appealing to me as a silver coin in a black coin flip. Conversely, a copper coin in a white coin flip does seem to be a bit more appealing to me than a copper coin in a black coin flip.

Hmm count me among the folks who hadn't seen the black 2x2s either previously. They might make coins, especially shiny ones, be more visually appealing. One downside for me at least is that I record a bunch of information about the coin on the 2x2 with a ballpoint pen and therefore would need to use a new pen that had white (or gold) ink if I made the switch. I can't easily take a pic of an entire 2x2 with my current camera set-up, but this is a sample of what I'm recording:

"The danger we all now face is distinguishing between what is authentic and what is performed." -----King Adz

I'm with Spence. White flips are definitely best to record info on them and to me they give a "research/archivist" vibe, which in itself is aesthetically pleasing IMO. If I wanted something "sassy" and more for presentation I wouldn't use flips at all but go to capsules with or without black foam inserts. I would then use the backing/support to create contrast.

I find writing on coin flips something for dealers, not collectors. I keep information about my coins in spreadsheets on my pc.
