Hi all, have a 8 Reales 1803 that I would like an opinion for, it weighs 26.8g. The reverse has bits of 'extra' metal and the edge looks sorta wonky.

That edge does not look like the ones on my 8 Reales.

Numister,
Have you tried the tissue test and the magnet test?

Don't know what you mean by that.
Those two tests should always be done as part of figuring out a coin.

It looks like a casting based on the raised bits on the reverse. I've never seen an edge that bad. It looks like it was double edged. I hope you didn't buy it, and if you did return it.

Uneven planchet or misaligned dies in the edger resulting in the edge segments not aligning. Could be an issue with the retaining lip. Likely planchet issue as the segments cross over vs the misaligned dies where the edges would run in parallel without crossing.

I'll vote authentic, albeit cleaned / polished, 1803 FT over FM over-assayer variety. Rare as a variety and I he edge error adds to the neatness factor.

The edge seems applied twice. It is not just the superposition of the half-runs in the engine.

It is also very shallow.

Tho big oddities. In a type that has many known fakes. I would keep away.

I'd vote with TwoKopeiki and say real.
I have not seen a coin that had that extent of overlap on the edge design, but I have seen a few with extensive overlap with one edge seemingly on top of another edge.
The coin details look good enough.
But as it is said that this is a commonly faked coin, I would certainly do the magnet stick test, magnet slide test, and specific gravity test to be sure.

This is one I would pass on if offered to me. Too many things just don't look right to me.
