Being a huge fan of the former U.S. Cheif Engraver, John Mercanti, I began assembling a top grade set of the Australian Wedge-tailed silver eagles bearing his obverse designs. Having only seven left for completion, I've decided to shift to the type one American Silver Eagles in MS/PF70 by date and finish. While I am fully aware there are going to be some high cost specimens a few questions, or thoughts, seem appropriate to ask. Being that this is not an easy or quick to complete undertaking of a few years, will the popularity and thereby prices decline? To be clear, I wouldn't think the market values would drop much, yet I have to wonder. In a nut shell, what are your thoughts on the long term of the series? Say in fifty years? Finally, I'm attempting this out of shear passion and not so much the investment end. So thanks in advance for the thought, advice and comments. I don't see the 2 hard ones going anywhere but up. For 70 grade, they are probably out of reach for anyone but with the deepest of pockets. The rest should be cake. And will appreciate, excellent timing.

Sounds like a great endeavor, Ballyhoo! Honestly as a collector, I've only seen the prices of ASEs increase over the past decade or so. Note: my gauge is and has been ebay and the PM dealers. You might do better or find otherwise at coin shows or coin dealers. But for me it is difficult to find an ungraded proof ASE out there for less than original sales price. It may be a completely different story with already-slabbed coins since that's what you're doing. Agree with Gilly on the two hard ones. Those are hard, graded in any grade or ungraded. Better save up! . Glad I was able to get one of them directly from the mint. The other I don't think I'll have a chance of owning until after the kid graduates from college. Anyway, keep us posted and good luck! P.S. you might want to update the subject of this post to be a wee bit more specific so as to attract other ASE collectors to weigh in. Cheers!

Best of wishes with that quest! Keep us posted. Quote: you might want to update the subject of this post Absolutely agree. Please edit the thread title to give some specifics on what the topic is. Try something like "Starting a Great Challenge for MS/PR70 ASE Quest' This will give prospective contributors a heads up on what the topic is, and will certainly attract more responses than what you have.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.artToo many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

Ballyhoo, I am Impressed with Your Topic and The Obvious Passion You Have towards The Coin Collecting Hobby, I see your interested in Collecting " the type one American Silver Eagles in MS/PF70 by date and finish. " To be Clear, Your collecting Every Single American Silver Eagle, made from the United States Mints, Bearing a Mint Mark, Correct, NOT the Bullion? The ASE Series Started in 1986, The Mints have produced Many differing " Finishes or Enhanced Versions " Of The Proofs and Uncirculated Coins.I am a Collector of THIS series since The Start, Bullion aside, ( I never finished my Dansco Album for Them). All Mint Marked Issues, In All Originally Packaged U S Mint Boxes, with ALL the Original Paper Work Too. While It has been Exciting from the Mint's Own Website during the Earlier Days of The challenges faced by Those who Patiently Went on line to order These ASE's and Boy, It Really Seemed like the Wild West, Major Chaos Just placing an Order, IF you were lucky to of Placed the order, It felt Great, Sweating all along the way.. Now a Days People go to the Secondary markets to Seek Older, no longer available coins... The Series has Many " KEYS " The 1995-W- Proof The 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof, The 2008-W Unc, with the Reverse of the 2007, Etc. My Suggestions, First Buy a Very Descriptive, Informative Reference Hard covered Book for The American Silver Series, Mintages, What years Certain Proofs or Unc's were Made etc. Learn Your Target, Know Your Target.... I see the Collection, I Myself have and are Updating as the Series unfolds ( 2024 ), as an Investment in Many things, it seem to appreciate Each and Every Year Too..... You may decide or May have Already decided to Go " Slabs " only, Your Choice, My Collection has Only Increased in Value, All Original. There are Only 30,102- 1995-West Point Proof Silver Eagles out There.... What started as a Series turned into a Serious Passion to Collect the Series, Imo, A Very Well Collected, Well Recognized, Well Revered, Quite possibly the Modern day, Most Collected Coin. I wish You Well, MD

I greatly appreciate all the advice and comments. My main reason for the long term market was posed as this is a bullion issued coin, and unlike say the Morgan or Peace series which circulated. While there will always be a market for both it was this ratio that had me thinking. And yes, Gilly I agree with the timing aspect. Think I'll target the semi-keys and keys first to see where things are. Hopefully I am able to aquire a few below where they were not long after issue. Finally, Morgan's Dad, that 95w is really gonna cost me....if I find it. I told the wife I'd sell my 1967 Lincoln and she laughed. I hate that she knows me better than myself.

Quote: I told the wife I'd sell my 1967 Lincoln and she laughed. I've ended up selling a few things I never thought I really wanted to sell in pursuit of ASEs. The realization that I had, it what I learned, is were don't really own anything permanently, we just hold them for awhile. You can't take it with you, you can pass it on or sometimes it becomes worthless. Mainly for me it was the thrill of the hunt. But one thing I also found out or realized, is that the coins do take up a lot less space than several things I sold to fund my ASE addiction. I also sold and swapped a lot of less valuable coins to get ASEs.

An ad hoc goal of mine was to have at least one ASE (bullion or mint marked) for every year (since 1986) of issue. I finally landed the missing years ( 93-97, 2003) last month. I realize it isn't truly a "set" in the eyes of a true collector but it gave me the thrill of "the hunt" in a budget-limited way. Good luck with your pursuit, Ballyhoo. Will look forward to reading your updates in the future.

Thanks, jbuck & morgans dad. . .My "date set" has a mix of Bullion, UNC, Proofs. . .Have been a subscriber to ASE releases for a while but there was a big gap within the time period between the birth of my daughter (1993) and my resumption of expanding my subscriptions in the mid 2000's. Like a lot of collectors, it was a matter of money. . . While I missed out on USM issue prices for some of the ASE sets ( e.g., The 2006 20th Anny 3 Coin Set and the 2011 25th Anny 5 Coin Set ) I was fortunate to get them on the secondary market. So, my ASE collection has been a fun expedition.

Thank you, Coinfrog and mojojo. Here's an update: This arrival in today's mail completes my ASE bullion set from 1986 - 2024. Have the 2025 (W) strike in hand. Another privy bullion coin is anticipated before the year is up. I'm one proof coin short of completing the Burnished and Proof varieties portion of the collection (through the 2024 releases).
