I have this 1876 Trade dollar that is blank on the reverse side. in this blank space is inscribed, "For Marcus First Christmas 1884" There is also a hole drilled at the top. The size is right. The weight is a little light probably due to the hole. Has anyon ever seen or know anything about this? Any information would be amazing. Thank you for your time. It appears to be a real one, and the coin is light due to the removal of the reverse design elements in order to have that very old inscription engraved onto it. Probably marking the very first holiday for a 1 year old.

Value? Honestly, not much more than silver IMO. No way to know if its a Philly, CC or S. Which really wouldnt matter anyway. Its far too damaged to carry any numismatic value.
That being said, it IS an interesting piece.

There are people who collect this category of coins that have been counter-stamped, engraved, etc. I hope ExoGuy will see this topic and give you what is, in my opinion, a more accurate assessment.

Thank you both for your replies. I too hope to hear more. It actually belongs to my stepdaughter and she has fallen into a rough spot and needs to sell this and a few other coins she has collected over the last few years. I offered my help to find at least a basic starting point for her. Again, thank you all for your replies.

My opinion it's worth $40 or $50 as a very cool curiosity.

There has been a lot of creative designs added to the Trade dollar. There are potty Trade dollars, box/opium Trade dollars and love token Trade dollars and counter stamp Trade dollars. Almost all of these sell for a premium over melt. I would put yours in the love token category. I can not see the details on the obverse to confirm if the example is genuine, but likely the coin is genuine. Here is a love token that recently sold on ebay for $249.99. The hole will most likely hurt the value as most collectors do not like holes in their coins. I am sure there are collectors that collect love token Trade dollars by date. I would also be interested in what exoguy has to say about the coin.

It's a vintage silver gift nearly 150 years old. I agree that its value is as a curiosity more than the silver value. If you could build a good story around the item—for example, whether this kind of gift was common in that era—it might help to pump the value a bit to a collector, antiques dealer, or jewelry store.

to the CCF As already stated, it appears too be an interesting love token with a Trade dollar as the base coin. Looking for ExoGuy views.
Take a look at my other hobby ... http://www.jk-dk.artToo many hobbies .... too much work .... not enough time.

Just observations - the inscription is rather plain and it's holed, which probably detracts from the value. However, it appears professionally done and 1876 being the centennial of the US might add interest. There seem to have been a lot of things done with 1876 coins for that reason. I have a watch fob made from an 1876 half.
