Are there any modern U.S. commemoratives that have varieties or errors that I should look for? I am just starting to collect modern commemoratives and I also collect error coins so that is why I am wondering.

Thank you!

Here's one to keep an eye out for:

Ok, thanks.

Another question, how does a commemorative silver dollar planchet escape the mint? I picked one up a month ago at a coin show because I thought it was cool to add to my small error collection (that is why I decided to start collecting modern commemoratives, after I got a commemorative to go with said planchet).

Thanks again!

Wait a minute? You paid $85 for a commemorative dollars "size" planchet ? Dollar "size" in quotes as that is what is on the label.

Basically some one purchased $20 in silver from a planchet manufacturer paid $11 to get it certified (and Anacs certified it correctly as a dollar sized planchet) and sold it to you for $85 for a net profit of $54?
That planchet never left the mint. That planchet never got to the mint.
I'm in the wrong business.

Interesting, I actually only paid $75 for it, not that it matters. Does the mint cut their own planchets for the commemorative coins or order them pre-cut and upset (raised rim)?

Edit: Found answer here; https://www.usmint.gov/learn/produc...n-production

So it is probably real, just intercepted before it could get to the mint. Thanks!

@Khromtau: Yes, your planchet is genuine and was very likely intended to be struck as a US commemorative silver dollar. PCGS, NGC and ANACS have all encapsulated them; other services may have also done so, but I'm only mentioning those that I have personally encountered.

I posted mine sometime back, and a good discussion ensued. You might find it helpful:

Do the suppliers provide planchets with rims to the mint? I thought they just provided the blanks.

Psuman08, look at the link I posted a few posts up. It says in there, other than burnishing, they come ready to be pressed. Raised rim and the whole deal.
