Welcome to the $1 sub-thread for my quest to noodle a complete set of Australian decimal coins from circulation starting April 2022.

I find dollar coins are the most interesting to noodle because you can find a lot of NCLT coins that are not meant to be in circulation.

This quest however involves pulling the 102 circulation dollar coins that currently have been released.

The Australian one dollar coin was introduced in 1984 featuring the famous "mob of roos" reverse (MOR).

There have been an ever increasing number of commemorative coins released, culminating with two series of A-Z coins (and rumours of an up-coming third), depicting something uniquely Australian starting with each letter of the alphabet.

Key date dollar coins include the 2016 change-over dollar and the 2014 MOR. 2020 QANTAS and MOR also promise to be low mintage coins. (I won't even mention the 2000 mule unless I miraculously happen upon another one)

There were no circulation one dollar coins released in 1987, 1989, 1990, 1991, 1992 and 2012.

Day 4
I could only get my hands on $100 worth of dollar coins for this first noodling session. I managed to find 30 different circulation coins plus a bonus NCLT.

I didn't find any of the 52 A-Z coins. These might prove to be quite the challenge given their low mintages and the amount of time since their release.

I did manage to find 4 of the 5 '100 years of ANZAC' coins released from 2014-2018, the exception being 2015, the lowest mintage coin of the series.

Highlight of this noodle were two high grade 2003 Women's Suffrage coins and a pristine 2018 Commonwealth Games NCLT coin (there are 4 different ones of these released in a set by Woolworths alongside the circulation $2 coins)

I found a nice 1984 coin, shown here along-side another normal condition coin that's been in circulation for 38 years.

Total $1 coins noodled: 100
Number of coins found: 30/102
Number of A-Z coins found: 0/52
Number of NCLT coins found: 1

Off to a slowish start but hope to have at least $500 worth to noodle next time.

Great start, any NCLT is a treat and love the 84 dollar too.
That worn one looks a lot like our 1990 and 1991 $1 and $2 coins now!

Amazed you did not get the Peace and Bicentennial coins though, those were always ubiquitous when I won $445 on the Pokies in Melbourne in 2012 and it spat out $1 coins!

MM

it might be worth while for you to check the 2003 $1 suffrage coins to see how many you can find with the trident closer to the rim than the standard issue. This variety can be a little elusive now in UNC, but I found a few when they first came out.

Day 6

Noodled $500 worth of dollar coins today and had some good finds including 24 new coins that I was looking for.

Let's start with the mob of roos.

I found the 1998, 2000, 2004, 2005, 2019 standard IRB and JC and the 2019 A and U privymarked versions.

Also found 3 of the 2020 MORs. This leaves only the 2014 MOR left to find (I don't believe the 2021 is actually in circulation yet, but correct me if I'm wrong)

2019 IRB and JC

2019 A and U privymark (already found the S)

Now the commemoratives (The 1986 Peace dollar was in a very nice condition):

Still haven't found any 2019 A-Z coins but today I found 8 of the 2021 coins (7 different). Thought it was funny I got a run of consecutive letters H,I,J,K,L

Found all the 2020 dollar coins: QANTAS, MOR and Donation Dollar

Also found another NCLT coin, 1992 Barcelona Olympics, Australia's first ever commemorative NCLT dollar coin

That leaves 48 coins to find: 2014 MOR, 2015 ANZAC, 2016 change-over and 45 A-Z.

Total number of dollar coins noodled: 600
Circulation dollar coins found: 54/102
A-Z coins found: 7/52
Number of NCLT coins found: 2

MMM

great sub-threads for all the individual denominations of coins released into circulation.

Fired up my interest yet again, so thanks.

I think another $1 MoR's which wasn't released into circulation is the 2007 MoR's.

The 2007 UNC set is highly underrated with only 66,641 sets produced containing the mint set only well designed Life Saver 20c and the $1 MoR's.

There's also a reasonably good chance that the 2021 MoR's will be a mint set only $1.

Day 11

Noodled another $500 bag and found 5 new coins.

Found the last 100 Years of ANZACs coin I needed: the 2015 coin with the lowest mintage of the series at 1.43 million.

Finally found a 2019 A-Z coin: M for Meat Pie

Also found 3 more 2021 A-Z coin including the Redback spider which I reckon is the best looking coin of the 2021 series.

No NCLT or high grade coins today.

Number of one dollar coins noodled: 1100
Number of different coins found: 59/102
Number of 2019 A-Z coins found: 1/26
Number of 2021 A-Z coins found: 10/26
Number of NCLT coins found: 2

Day 14

Another $500 noodled, only 2 new coins found.

A heavily-circulated 2014 MOR (mintage 1 million):

And a 2021 Y for Yabby

Got to say I like the A-Z coins featuring Australian flora and fauna rather than the ones with snacks or TV shows on them.

Also found a very nice 1985 MOR. This coin hasn't been in circulation for 37 years.

Total number of one dollar coins noodled: 1600
Number of different coins found: 61/102
2019 A-Z coins found: 1/26
2021 A-Z coins found: 11/26
NCLT coins found: 2

Could only get my hands on $340 worth of dollar coins today but found 4 A-Z coins that I needed.

2019 F for Footy and V for Vegemite
2021 N for Nobbies Nuts and S for Sydney Harbour Bridge

Found a couple more 2020 QANTAS coins. I am happy to grab as many of these low mintage coins as I can.

Total number of one dollar coins noodled: 1940
Number of different coins found: 65/102
2019 A-Z coins found: 3/26
2021 A-Z coins found: 13/26
NCLT coins found: 2
