After thinking this over for quite some time, I have made the decision to sell at least part of my gold bullion coins in order to fund the purchase of a few graded, classic gold coins such as a $20 Saint Gaudens from 1907-1933.
After all, it gives me greater satisfaction to own a coin with an interesting history, than a stack of expensive, modern bullion coins in a plastic tube.
So, I went through my handful of $50 Gold Eagles and noticed I had one from 1986. At first I thought the Roman numerals were fake, but apparently Arabic numerals were used later.
Do you think it makes sense to have it graded and then send to auction? I think the coin is at least MS65 if not better.
The other coins are from 1999-2007 and are probably worth just their melt value.

Without looking at actual auction sales, my sense is it will sell at melt value unless it came back 70. I suspect the chances of getting that grade are not high. If it were me, I would sell it raw.

Buy the way, I love your logic of selling bullion and buying a certified Saint!

I've kind of expanded in that direction as well. Buying European gold, sovereigns, francs, koronas etc. then submitting them for grading and authentication. Not planning on selling any tubes of bullion coins at this time, they still have a place for stacking purposes.

Unless the coin comes back MS70, there is no premium for the slab. I picked up the below (and a few others) for the same price as a bullion coin!

I also agree with Steve, a classic gold coin has history which these bullion ones don't.

You might be right.
At first, I looked at the PCGS Price Guide where they have the 1986 $50 Gold Eagle in MS condition anywhere from $2500 to $4250. However, currently on ebay a well-known bullion dealer is selling NGC graded 1986 Gold Eagle coins in MS69 condition for $2232.
