Anyone who collects the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games 50 cent coins would have noticed that on ebay the Gymnastics coin for some unexplained reason is always listed as "rare" or "scarce" and are priced from $70 to over $100.

A look at the mintages of the 16 coins, each depicting a different sport, will show that the Gymnastics coin is actually the 2nd most common of the set.

Basketball - 21,994
Hockey - 21,761
Shooting - 21,070
Weightlifting - 22,332
Gymnastics - 25,574
Rugby 7s - 24,427
Cycling - 22,861
Athletics - 22,475
Triathlon - 22,302
Netball - 22,432
Table Tennis - 22,502
Aquatics - 31 702
Squash - 21 902
Lawn bowls - 22,602
Boxing - 22,602
Badminton - 22,270

An additional 15,000 of each coin is included as part of a full set that comes in a folder. (Often seen for sale WITHOUT the scarce Gymnastics coin)

The coin with the lowest mintage (Shooting) usually goes for $12-$20, as do most of the other coins.

Who decided the Gymnastics coin was something special and why has everyone else seemingly jumped on board?

I'm with you - I remember seeing this years ago and not being able to figure it.
I was only looking at coins from change in 2006 so I don't remember, but maybe they weren't all released at the same time and for ever reason, there may have been a shortage of the gymnastics coins which has kept the price artificially high.

OzLeigh, I put your question of why the Gymnastics coin is dearer to buy now to a coin dealer who I buy from.
He has it for sale at $65.00 while others are $15.00 to $27.50.
He replied that it one of those collecting mysteries, no known reason for it as he is aware.
Maybe he has the cheapest Gymnastics coin for sale?

Coincollect ,is the coin dealer .
Probably best to buy as a set ?
You could buy all his stock and then sell on ebay for $100

Looks like that seller listed all the coins at $17.95 each BIN and someone quickly snaffled that scarce gymnastics coin and ignored the rest.

I bought the full set years ago for something like $14 a coin.
