Hello,
Does anyone else think that collecting Australian decimal coins would be more satisfying if the RAM had have minted "traditional" coins such as coat of arm 50 cents and mob of roos 1 dollar coins EVERY year instead of issuing rather uninspiring commemorative coins in their place.
I don't care if they were mint set only or NCLT but they could have been available in some form.
Missing 50 cent coat of arm coins are 1970, 1977, 1982, 1988, 1991, 1994, 1995, 1998, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2003.
Missing $1 MOR coins are 1986, 1988, 1992, 1993, 1996, 1997, 1999, 2001, 2002, 2003.
From 2004 onwards both 50c coat of arms and $1 MOR have been minted and released in some form.
Please correct me if I am wrong.

Yes - I find it hard to get excited about a lot of the new commemoratives. Even 30 to 40 years ago there were still commemoratives but it was manageable - a $5, a $10 and $200 coin each year. The circulating commemoratives are still fine I think.

MachinMachinMan welcome
All years of the 50c and $1 coins you listed only had Commemorative coins minted, no Coat of Arms or Mob of Kangaroos. There were 2 x types of the 1970, 1994, 2000 commemorative 50c for these years minted and 10 x 50c for 2001 - the fabulous Federation of Australia series.
Of the $1 coins on your list, there were 6 x (7x ?) types of the 1997 and 2 x types of the 2001 minted.
I hope this helps you.

Thanks squaremealroundplate,
I assume the 1997 coins you are talking about are the Kingsford Smith mint marked coins with the map of the world. Occasionally find them in circulation.

Actually there are several 1977 CofA 50c pieces known to exist. Probably mint sport. You would be a rich man if you found one in your change.

Not me. Personally, completing a "Set" where every single coin in the set is identical except for the year, is boring. I like the fact that I can find a coin in change that I wasn't even aware of the existence of until I found it, or I'd only heard rumours about. I like the fact that there are dozens of issued-for-circulation coins that I've never found, and likely never will find unless I buy them from a dealer. Yeah, weird. But that's me. And I can certainly relate to the obsessive completionist collector who sees the blank holes in their sets album as an aggravation, an itch that needs scratching until they go away. Go have a read of Australian Coin Review magazines from the mid-1970s, even into the 1980s. Those magazines are full of collectors demanding that Australia issue more commemorative coins, both circulating and non-circulating. And you'll find very few people warning against issuing "too many commemoratives". So the Mint is just giving us what we asked for. That doing so also gives the Mint a tidy profit is a happy coincidence.

Hmm, the question is - which is more likely to be " discovered " first - the 1977 CoA or the 1992 MoR's ? Either would do me fine but I think a frog would grow feathers before I found either one.

you might be lucky enough to find a 1993 50c in change with the fatter 1993 numerals, though they could be a Mint Set only 50c.

Any ideas why it is so hard to find decent examples of 1996 and 1997 coat of arms 50 cents and 2000 MOR $1 in circulation. I've been through more than 100,000 of both denominations and am yet to find an XF or better.

Quote: Relatively low mintages perhaps? Over 4M of the 1997 made, so that is very low, but over 19M of the 1996 were made, which is still low compared to some, but the highest of the KM#83 50 cent coins. 2000 MOR $1 is about 7.5M. Steve :)

Quote: Relatively low mintages perhaps? I have found every other circulating 50c and $1 in aUNC or better (and many of those have lower mintages) but these 3 coins still elude me in high grades. I'm baffled. Maybe the 2000 MORs all got worn out in the great mule hunt of the early 2000s.
