The discrimination mode takes a lot of practice to fully trust that what you don't dig isn't valuable. My father and I had this conversation decades ago. If you only hunt one type of soil, and pretty much know the composition and condition of the soil, and know how each metal type pings after leaching, you might use the discrimination mode successfully. And you have to have a good quality detector with the right coils. Dad had a closet full of all sorts of detectors.
