Noobie alert! #128680; went out today for the first time since I bought the Garett ace 200 and had a few finds. Only swung for an hour and found a 1962 young head nickel on the beach! Some nails and some pesky iron type rocks were everywhere! Do you use non discrimination for the beach or only coin / jewelry modes?

I'm also pretty new, but I use the coin discrim and take off the nickel tone because it is in the midst of junk

Very cool! Thanks coin dude. I may try just the coin or jewelry mode next time to avoid iron targets.

The discrimination mode takes a lot of practice to fully trust that what you don't dig isn't valuable. My father and I had this conversation decades ago. We both dug everything because we hunted so many different soils, sand and sites. Though he could tell you with great accuracy what it was before he dug it. He did a lot of pre-hunt research and hunted for 40 years,

If you only hunt one type of soil, and pretty much know the composition and condition of the soil, and know how each metal type pings after leaching, you might use the discrimination mode successfully. And you have to have a good quality detector with the right coils. Dad had a closet full of all sorts of detectors.

Thank you for your info Blind Squirrel! I feel like anything that pinged at the beach below a 10 was generally the "iron rocks" but the rusty nails pinged a tad higher. I'm not sure what is valuable or not in the iron range so I figured I would continue digging them. I will have to go back with my new beach scoop I made and see if I get anything different!

Coinman, we actually ended up making our own sand scoop for "in the water" detecting. We dug everything, either to clean up the dig or find something of value. And, if you hunt the same site(s) you now have any trash out of the ground.

My theory on water finds at the beach is the owner would bend over to test the water temp an the rings would fall off. Found over 50 rings in a 100 foot stretch of beach from the shore to about 6 feet deep.

You would be surprised where you will find coins. Old abandoned railway stations was a favorite, as were civil war battle fields.

That's incredible to hear that kind of success! It really gets me excited to try my scoop I crafted from a basket strainer and some fittings! I will have to try my luck in the water as well!
