I am looking at a collection of Australian $2 coins for sale on trade me and its not cheap.
But it has all these commemorative coins with rings of colour on them and the seller says some like the 2012 Red Poppy are worth $200 or more (The coin has no mintmark, apparently the C mintmark makes it even more rare).
The set has all of the commems to 2019 except that C mark Red Poppy and 2013 QE2 Diamond Anniversary coloured coin - has all the Armistice and war ones and Olympic teams etc, most of the circulations and uncoloured versions.
As you all know I mainly collect Kiwi and old silver - but what is the huge interest in these coins as they are only base metal and mintages are quite high around 1 - 2 million, which may be low there but here 1 million is only a less common level.
Perhaps someone can school me. Are these 2010s commem $2 coins a legitimate collectible or just the last investment bubble like Mint sets of stamps, Phonecards and Silver were in the past. I mean if I lay a few hundred bucks down for this stuff , will it likely be face value only by 2030 or is there some market here?

@Princetane - Have only been collecting for a short while but FWIW I'd say wait and choose carefully. There seems to be a trend for 'dealers' (profiteerers) to buy up new releases and then slowly release them at inflated prices. As for the 2012 Red Poppy at $200, way overpriced. Can get a carded UNC for ~$120-130. What grade are you after? I get many surplus AUNC just from noodling that I would be happy to trade for Kiwi coinage.

I have a complete issued for circulation $2 type collection of colored coins. All taken from pocket change at face value.
I have to confess: I did buy 2 x$2 colored poppy coins (for $4 each about two years ago), at a local show.
Have not considered privy or mint marks.
I guess that I could sell them to a coin dealer for their face value,
but what would be the point of doing that, when I consider the effort of finding them in the first place?

I don't have all the coloured $2 in my spares, but if you're happy
to trade I could probably swap you at least half of those coloured
coins for near face value. I don't have spares 2012 red poppy or 2013
coronation. I'm always looking for Kiwi coins to fill my holes.

Sounds nice, I have a lot of later NZ and a few worn silver pieces, I do have plenty of the 2018 and 2015 50 cent coins and recent ones.
Basically this dealer is generally okay but a bit flaky at times, the collection he wants $432 for (NZ dollars) but I am offering him $370 if it does not sell.
It has all the coloured coins except 2013 Coronation and most of the aborigine ones. Some of the 1990s Aborigine coins are worn from circulation but all the coloured coins are shiny. Its is a Victoria stamp traders PVC style album with spare pages and goes to Dec 2018, and someone has added 5 2019 coins to it.

The dealer is playing hardball, he says if it does not sell the price is going up $100 and so far no bidders or even watchers other than me.
Think Greed may have consumed him.

I let it slide, his greed was putting me off and I think it was overpriced. I have done too much spending lately anyway.

That says it all. No bidders or watchers in todays market means overpriced. Looks like the dealer is trying force you into a sale (does he sell solar panel installs and roof restorations on the side?). Personally I have drooled over the Kiwi coins on Trade Me but the majority don't have Paypal or won't ship to Oz (and to think NZ almost became another state of Oz). I'm sure myself and others in the land Down Under can get hold of most of what you want at face value or for trade for Kiwi coinage. I'll be noodling $2000 of $2 coins shortly so will probably get a lot of coloured commemoratives. As Coaster mentioned, with the exception of the Coronation and Red Poppy, the rest are not that hard to come by.

depends on the version of poppy red 2012 coloured, those been through circulation making it very likely that paint/ink get partially removed therefore price can vary from $25-$110 dollars, UNC coins retail carded RSL version go for about $100-$140 (note dealers are willing to pay 85-100 on these). Graded PCGS coins depending on the grade can go $125-$400, with C mintmarked going for a even more crazy $150-$600. Then you can the Sherwood carded version $200ish not sure (havent look closely enough). Then you have the Card C mint marked from RAM which $250-$450 (sometimes more).
Is this a bubble who know, however these are high but stablish prices they have been roughly this price for about 2yrs since I started and I also know they basically increase value wise maybe 1yr or so after release.
As to where to get one that is good value I don't know (loads want them but arent willing to pay that sort of prices for what is essentially a $2 dollar coins with a mintage for about 500K)

I bought the thing at a reduced price, the dealer realised his folly.
It may increase, it may not, at the least I have $114 in $2 coins now!

The price of the coloured $2 coins does seem particularly high to me - surely it will have to correct soon.

Some of the coins in this collection. Starts well with UNC 1988, 1989 and 1990   The 1988 maybe slightly high AU, but the other 2 are probably set coins as these are fresh. The 2012 Remembrance pair do not disappoint. The coloured poppy is in good shape and looks fully UNC to me.  |

The only major coin missing is the 2013 Queen's Diamond Jubilee which I believe is a very scarce coin like the 2012 Coloured poppy. Semi keys 2014 and 2017 I think (Forgot which was which)  I love the colouring on these  2015 pair, 100th anniversary and Flanders field poem  2017/2018 ones, no where near as scarce or rare, but beautiful colouring. The collection also had all the Olympic coins, the Possum ones and half of the Mr Squiggles, Commonwealth and Invictus games and of course the 2019 Police and Wallabies along with most of the usual date $2 coins. |

The whole coloured $2 coin thing is an odd one. Coin collecting in Australia kind of went crazy in covid, Pretty much everything released in the last 12 to 18 months sells out in crazy times and the is flooding ebay straight away at insane prices, where as much nicer older coins seem to be somewhat steady. Time will tell if the situation will turn around. As for the coloured coins they really stand out in your change so people tend to put them aside in their jewllery box or what have you to give their grandkids in the future or some such. I can't comment on the rest of the world but in the Australian collector communities these coins are hoarded in a big way (I havent heard of anybody not keeping a coloured $2 of any description for a long time). Another disturbing trend for those of us that just generally want a single example (sometimes two) for our albums is there are a few "entrepreneurs" who apparently have sorting machines that can detect specific coins and at least one Brisbane "collector" claims he is running over a million in currency a year through these machines. So who knows whats going to happen, they could keep going up or for some reason people could suddenly start panic selling if the current coin collecting trend drops I guess time will tell. |
