Just noticed the latest offering from the RCM - the 2020 Recognition Medal & Magnet. It is intended as a wearable piece of jewelry as the medal comes with a separate magnat that can be used to "pin" the medal to clothing. It is being issued so that individuals can personally award a medal to those who have answered the call during the COVID-19 pandemic. I think it's a nice way of saying "Thanks!" to those who have gone beyond the norm for the benefit of others. I also like how the RCM is donating its net proceeds on sales to charity - the Breakfast Club of Canada's COIVD-19 Emergency Fund. I'm glad it wasn't just a "for profit" venture that is taking advantage of the current situation. You can check out the details on the RCM web site under "New Releases" if you're interested. When credit is due, during the RCM's shutdown they were producing PPE and donating to local hospitals, that's cool ! |

My opinion is pessimistic here. I tried to be quiet, when saw the RCM's mail, but since the topic has been started, will express it. I think, this medal is not good enough and not recognizable to be worn. As appreciation token - yes, probably. Presented on paper card also not makes it keep-able....simple plastic case with transparent cover / lid will be better. As a citizen and not a collect, would be happier to see commemorative circulation 25cents with the same theme. |

I think designs that focus on the "heart" being shown by many dealing with the virus (and helping others) is a strong theme for a recognition medal. For me, it works! I think the medal's small size makes it conducive to being worn - the piece is under an inch in diameter and smaller than many pieces of jewelry.

I agree with the good purpose of raising money for charity.
But hardly believe in a scenario, when someone buying for him / herself to wear it (people usually proud silently) , or same, do not see owners or operators of Buy'N'Large (hypothetical North American department chain store ) buying these medals and awarding employees as recognition.

I think people who answer the call of duty would rather want money rather a worthless piece of metal. Say thanks to the health care providers by giving them a raise or a lump sum of money. What are they going to do with a medal that they will just throw into a drawer.

I think folks are missing the point here. The medal is not being given by a government agency in an official capacity. It is for individuals to use to thank other individuals that they believe went above and beyond.
The medals are a one-on-one type of acknowledgment. I may not be able to give a friend a bonus or raise or large sum of cash, but it doesn't mean I don't want their efforts to go unrecognized. Yes, the medal is a small token of appreciation, but people go unrecognized all the time and this medal is one way to say "Thanks!" Even a non-monetary gift of recognition can be meaningful!

Exactly - I was thinking to purchase a couple of these to give to the 'Video techs' at my mothers nursing home who literally risked everything to come to work just so we could "Zoom" with our families.

 Most companies have well established recognition programs and individuals show their appreciation many other ways. Anyway this appears to be another "trinket" rather than "NCLT". Just my Two Cents...

The Post Office already has them.
Unfortunately, wasn't possible to see the token / medal, since the card sealed (similar as it was for 20for20 coins)

Our business was deemed "essential" so we remained operational for the entire COVID period.
We gave each employee one of these recognition medals in September to show our appreciation for their efforts.
I would say that overall, they were well received.
The Mint did a good job on this one in my estimation.
