Hi

As per my previous post this is the second coin from 1897 celebrating the Queen's 60th Anniversary in the city of Ballarat.

Appreciate any advice on these.

Regards

Jason

It is a medal, not a coin. There were so many medals made for that anniversary that they have little collector value. Can you tell if the medal was made with the hole or was made later? if made later it would drop the value even more.

Thanks for the response. Not sure about the hole as I wasn't given any info on them. Grandfather and father passed some time ago and my mother had packed them away pretty much forgetting about them with a bunch of stamps. So trying to obtain any info I can about them.

Much appreciated

As with the 1887 piece, this medal was made and distributed with the hole already there; it does not detract from the value, thoguh having one witht he original ribbon it would have come with wold probably bring a premium.

This medal is listed in the Carlisle medal catalogue as number C1897/21. Minted by Stokes & Sons (the company changed name since 1887) with a mintage of 5000 in gilt-bronze (your piece), 53 in silver and one variety in gold engraved to the Mayor.

Having a higher mintage and broader distribution base - these would likely have been given away to every school child in Ballarat at the time - they are more common, listed at Au$25 in the 2008 price guide.
