Seleukos I Nikator

Impressive. We don't often see coins of empires' founders posted. We might see an occasional Ardashir I and such, but rarely. Personally I've never managed it for my very narrow collecting focus. Arsaces I and Kamnaskires I have always eluded me.

It was another happy accident Bob. I liked the bull reverse on the coin, and I didn't have a Medusa obverse. It was only when I started researching the coin, that I realised who Seleukos I Nikator actually was.

This "Unknown Roman/India Princely States/Islamic Coin?", featuring a bull and camel caught my eye. Going by the diameter of 23mm, thickness of 4mm, and weight of 11.4g, it appears to be an AE Pentachalkon of Kujula Kadphises (circa 30 - 80 AD).

Kujula Kadphises (circa 30 - 80 AD)
AE Pentachalkon
Obverse: Humped bull walking right. Reverse: Camel, right. Kharosthi Ga above.

It was the best looking example that was within my budget, Bob. When the seller offered a discount I couldn't resist.

Another twofer. Neat serpent. Quite a menagerie you've got, Jim. I hope they're all house broken.

Oh yes, all house trained, Bob. Thank goodness.

I am amazed at the names and the histories that are behind these coins too.

Thanks Bob and Paul. I was really pleased with that one when it arrived.

Another addition to the zoo is this elephant reverse from the Seleukid Kingdom - Antiochos III Megas. Struck off centre, so not the best image of an elephant.

Seleukid Kingdom. Antiochos III Megas. 223-187 B.C. Æ. Sardes.
Laureate head of Apollo right / elephant standing left; to left, anchor. BAΣIΛEΩΣ above, ANTIOXOY below.
Diameter 13mm. Weight 2.77 gr.
REF: SC 979; HGC 9.
