I had the fun of getting a couple hours in on Saturday at the UT / Wasatch Winter coin show. I just wanted to share a couple observations. We just moved here from FL in 2018, so it was my first time attending this particular show. In a nutshell, it was a great show!
Attendance: I was surprised at how busy it was. Rarely did I see any tables with fewer than two people checking stuff out. Lots of people walking around; it honestly felt a little congested at times.
Variety: not sure if this is a FL thing, but the last few shows I had been to in FL for FUN and in Ft Myers were VERY heavy on Morgans. Most dealers brought a lot of Morgan's. This UT show had more variety than I can remember. All sorts of classics - Bust, 3 cent, shield, it was all there in abundance. Plus some foreign and a few dealers with good selections in local stuff.
Happy Dealers: honestly, I've never been to a show anywhere with so many pleasant to talk to dealers. Grumpy was unusual, and even with my low budget, I still got my attention too.
Only complaint I heard from a dealer was he was into the PM of day two and still hadn't sold a Morgan. The other stuff was moving, just not those. He noted he didn't bring any keys, and there was just no demand outside of that. He did give me AWESOME deal on a MS63 PCGS Indian Head for my hoard of 82s. I had two already, but the price was too good to not add a third.
On the other two coins I was looking at, I felt the prices were too strong. One was an MS62 1882 O/O, seller simply didn't want to budge, and the obverse had too much chatter to justify it (even for a 62). The other was an 1882 / 882
Shield nickel. In whipping out my magnifying glass, this was a VERY minor overdate that I simply couldn't justify the premium pricing for.
