the idea for this post comes from my nocturnal activities.

before starting this I checked in with a moderator who counseled me & told me to post it here. I will try to keep it as short as possible, although i'll need to sacrifice some details. i'll try not to ramble.

i am going to demonstrate alchemy by other means.

everyone has a found money story. I encourage all members to share their found money stories, with or without pix, and whether collectible coins tie into it or not. my story has both.

some time ago I decided I was going to retire early. I had turned 50 and decided i'd had enough of work & jobs. I am really only semi-retired at this point. I'm not as busy as I used to be. i'd rather be a retired painter so I can be a full-time coin enthusiast & cat whisperer.

in december of 2017 I acquired an apartment I did not like, but had to take it. by january/february I wanted out, but was stuck with what I got. I prefer to be a homebody, spending most of my time at home with my cat/s, but because I absolutely loathed my new living arrangements I tried to start spending a little more time out when i'd go out at night.

after midnight I would go out and feed a kitty near a previous apartment. she was one of three strays I fed when I lived in that area, the other two I had adopted & were living with me.

so, I began spending more time out & about after feeding the kitty, walking & biking around, just killing some time.

eventually I began noticing all the coins lying around everywhere. change, either tossed aside or dropped, almost everywhere i'd go... streets, sidewalks, parking lots... walking through parking lots at night, I figured out how to spot coins on the pavement by just watching for the 'gleaming disk'. coins reflect streetlights, so when walking or biking around I watch for the gleaming disks. I pick up every cent I see, anywhere I find them. I've trained myself how to differentiate between a quarter and a flattened bottle cap. lots of junk on the ground can easily be mistaken for a coin, but a coin has a very bright, unmistakeable gleam to it. if the coin isn't gleaming, sometimes I can recognize a coin on the ground in bad light due to it's perfect circular shape. I don't always need to see the gleaming.

i started collecting found change. each night i'd go out to feed the kitty and then pedal around watching for coins on the ground. after an hour or two i'd return home, empty my pocket, examine what i'd found, write it down, take a picture of it and put it into a jar. over time the change accumulates.

as the weeks & months passed I began expanding & refining my search each night, primarily to areas where people have their money out... malls, restaurants, grocery stores, gas stations... all of these places yield change in varying amounts. I also narrowed my search times to between midnight & 2am.

i now have a set routine for finding money. I walk/bike through places that tend to yield money somewhat consistently, but I literally spot change lying around almost everywhere I go. a typical night will yield $1.50-$2.50 in change. sometimes I find paper dollars (FRNs), but not often, once a week if I'm lucky. kind of rare to find more than $5 on any night, but it happens.

my first search cycle ended in november when I filled the fifth jar. the five jars topped at varying amounts. I had amassed over $300.

just before this past thanksgiving I sorted, counted & rolled the five jars of change. I had 70 rolls of cents ($35), 11 rolls of nickels ($22), 20 rolls of dimes ($100), and 9 rolls of quarters ($90), plus all the FRNs I had found. I use quarters for laundry, so I bought all the quarters from myself with more FRNs. this is what I took to the bank:

all found money! the kicker is that I repeatedly find money every night in essentially the same areas. people really do just throw down their change. i'll continue scraping it all up as long as they keep throwing it down.

no quarters in the picture since I kept them all. there's $90 in extra FRNs in the pic because I bought the quarters. I had found about $113 in FRNs, mostly ones.

i deposited all of that money into my checking account. once my deposit registered, I then made a credit card payment with that money.

before I conclude this & tell you what I did with the money I want to show you some of the interesting things I've picked off the ground this year:

1916-D LWC:

unbelievable! but it's true, I picked this off the ground somewhere, not a trace of road rash on it. I have no idea where I scored this beauty. I don't examine my finds until I get home, so any great stuff I find I don't realize I have until I get home & empty my pocket. same is true with the rest of what you're about to see.

1918 LWC:

1925 LWC:

1935-S LWC:

i found those three on the same night, likely in the same place, I just don't know where. yes, I picked these off the ground somewhere.

1958-D LWC:

wow! that '58 looks like it fell out of a BU roll. another groundscore, believe it or not.

i also look for key dates, like 1972 LMCs. look at these pretty nice '72s I've picked off the ground:

i haven't yet found a '72 doubled die, but I keep separate all the '72s I find. these four are just in really nice condition for their age & considering I picked them off the ground.

1963-D Roosevelt dime:

the only silver I have picked off the ground. has a moderate case of road rash, but it's still a silver dime, and has a die chip at the mintmark.

i also find foreign coins... euros, canadian, bahamas, mexico, but I don't register any of it in my notes & typically don't take pictures of it. I keep all the foreign coin in a small container, usually will find someone to give them to... kids are good to give them to, gets them curious about coins & money in general.

currently, I am on jar 7. jar 6 filled a week ago, topped at about $90.

...so after I made my credit card payment with the found money this is what I spent that money on:

i bought myself a random date AU 1853 quarter eagle gold coin! I turned in a small mountain of change for one gold coin no bigger than a dime.

it even has a little clashing on the reverse. lucky me!

this, to me, is alchemy by other means. I turned a small heap of (free) junk metal into gold.

cats & coins are my life. I hope many of you are inspired to share your found money stories here. I'm glad to kick off this new thread!

(the actual Mr Pink, my cross-eyed flame-point siamese)

happy hunting!

Myself and mostly my Wife find money on the ground all the time. And not just coins.
Also what is found in the reject bin of the coinstar machines.
I tracked this in a text file for a while but stopped.
Now I plan on really keeping track starting 2019.
It would be fun to figure out just how much "Free Money" we aquire over a year.

My Wife found both my 43 steel penny and my War Nickel on the ground.

I have found several thousand coins in the last ten years or so. They include several hundred silver coins - Dozens of Barber, Walking Liberty and Franklin halves, seated, barber, standing liberty and Washington quarters, seated, barber, mercury and Roosevelt dimes, dozens of Indian Head cents, two-cent peices, buffalos, two silver dollars, etc, there's a long list. I found these coins beneath the earth.

Mr.P - That is a nice reward for your effort. A credit card payment to boot, good stuff. Congrats.

A long while ago now, I went to use an ATM and found 20 bucks sitting in the tray. Not another soul in sight, it was an isolated machine. Turned this find into breakfast for 4.

I have also found 2 ATM cards left by their owners. How do you forget these things, money and cards? Small town me returned the cards to respective banks. I wonder how these people reacted when they needed their card the next time. Uh-OH!

Worked at an airport for years, and once found two Canadian $20 bills in the parking lot. Cashed them in!

Was on my way to a meeting once and pulled through the drive in at Taco Bell. I pulled into a parking spot and when I pulled out my food it slipped out of the wrapper and landed right on my dress pants. Wiping with a napkin made it worse. Saw a little consignment store in the plaza and ran in, grabbed a pair of black pants off the rack. They fit so I just asked the clerk to cut the tag off and ring them up. They were like $4. and I ran out to get to where I needed to be. Later I put my hand in one of the pockets and there was a $20 bill in them.
Another time I was also at an ATM and found a $20 in the tray. Two $20's for the price of one. That's the only two times I have found any money to speak off other than seeing random change here and there. Once in like at a fast food place the man in front of my dropped a WAD of cash but I quickly tapped him on the shoulder and pointed to his feet. He bought my lunch.

Your words just struck a nerve. Which I had not thought of in many many years.

It must have been around 1962/1963, I was 10 or 11 years old. You couldn't walk 2 or 3 blocks without seeing a phone booth, (That's a pay phone, where you put money in to make a phone call. For all you kids out there. LoL!!).

As kids, we knew where all the phone booths were. You would never pass one without checking the coin return slot.

I was by myself in an isolated area and came across a phone booth. I check the slot....NOTHING! I hit the side of the phone with a palm of my hand and change started dumping into the coin return slot! I started pulling the change out and filled my pockets! I kept hitting the phone and change kept coming out! As a kid, it was a financial windfall! I can still feel that feeling, it took my breath away! It was like a slot machine!!

So of course, I headed straight to the candy store. I think back on it. I don't remember, but that change had to have been ALL SILVER!!

One thing is for sure.... The best stories of someone finding gold bars, a coin hoard buried in someones backyard, ship wreck gold/silver coins, a bag of money dropped by the bank robbers, etc.... are not going to be talk about here!

Few years back found four $20 bills underneath an ATM at a convenience store. Left the clerk with my phone number and told them if anyone came asking about the cash to call me. No one ever did.

ha! those are all great! I love hearing stories of found money.

i have numerous scores I left out of my post:

-found nearly $50 in the same place on two different occasions, this year;
-found a wad of $35 on the floor inside a gas station in october;
-found a sawbuck on the pavement in front of the dollar store in october;
-one time years ago I found $20 in an ATM tray;
-found $40 in the street years ago..

...on and on.

I've found several ATM cards over the years, always turned over to the originating bank or dropped into a mailbox.

i always check coinstar machines, but to date I haven't found anything of note.

i guess my finding money isn't as exciting as what I do with it once I've accumulated enough to do something with. turning in a bunch of change & exchanging it for gold just blows my mind, primarily because I continually find it every night in the same areas. hopefully i'll get to do it again in 2019. I want to get an incuse indian head quarter eagle next. I'm at about 33% of what I need to purchase it.

last night I collected $0.95 without trying to find anything it's always out there waiting for me to walk by & notice it.

i am at a disadvantage last few nights.. both of my bikes are in the shop, plus I'm healing up from an out of place vertebrae. nothing to do but lie here reading on the CCF. so keep those stories coming!

Years ago my clothes dryer was broken so I had to go to the laundromat.
Found 800.00 I left a note with my phone number waited a week or two no one called
My wife said take it to the police and turn it in. The cops looked at me like are you crazy
Had to wait 90 days. They called and said come on down the cash is yours.
As we had already bought a new dryer off to the casino we went. Can't remember if we won but we had a good time.

Don't know where you people all live but by me I've never even seen a coin on the ground. And paper money? Not a chance. I guess people around me are to cheap to loose anything in the way of money. Maybe they don't mention it but no one I know ever said they found money on the street, in a parking lot or anywhere. Being in a highly populated area, I guess if a coin or paper money was on the ground anywhere for more than a minute, it would have been picked up.

Oh these are great stories. I hope it catches on. Here's another one....

One time the whole neighborhood's cars got broken into. We talk, so, we all reported it to the cops. Nothing big was stolen, only pocket change and what not. I did lose about $50.00 in Canadian Tire money and told the cops this. Well didn't they bust the guy because he had my Can. Tire $. It gets better, after the waiting period, I got a bag full of change. The hoard from all the cars. Over a 100 bucks. The cops just gave it to me because they had no one else claiming it. Ya just never know. I did get my Can. Tire $ back, but got hit again after it was at about $75 because a passenger didn't lock her door. So, ya just never know.

One time in the super market my Wife found 5 twentys rolled together. That paid for my sons preschool that month.
Another time My Wife and Son were sitting in her car when She spots paper money blowing by in the parking lot. She tells my son "Go get that" ends up being a twenty which my son spent on gas.
Yet another time my Wife is walking out to her car when behind it she finds a dollar picks it up spots another picks it up then finds a ten. picks that up too.
