I am not sure what the correct term for these are. Both were issued in payment for services. The person being paid then had to present them at the proper office to collect the actual payment. Some of the signatures are historically important for Wisconsin.

1 and 3 are warrants, properly called money warrants, financial warrants, or payment warrants.

Like bills of exchange, these can be discounted or traded, though these don't seem to be have been.

No 2 is a receipt.

Thanks Pertinax, that is what I would have called them. picture #2 is the back of #1. #3 has a blank back.

,
why is the receipt for such a different amount ?

As a matter of interest to me, did you buy these; if so, how much did you pay ?

It is not for a different amount. The amount has been left blank at the top. The rev. stamp covers the year of the date so it was written below the stamp leaving the partially printed date unfilled (186_). The bottom line is a receipt for the unspecified amount mentioned on the front. I bought these about 12 years ago for $55 and then rediscovered them while looking for something else.

IIRC a Warrant is a demand upon a government and a check is a demand upon a bank. I know when we were writing software to do ACH transfers for the state, we had to be careful not to call them checks even in code comments.
