I have scoured my yard trying to figure it out. The thing that bugs me the most is I will hear a ping and go over it a few times and then go back and it's gone! Or If I sweep right it pings, But when I sweep left it won't! I have my controls set to coins and at minimal depth. But I have found 4 cars,1 dump truck,1 helicopter, and a zincoln that was just horrible! Also my brother owns a house that was built in 1864 as best we can tell. The deed states 1864,but when looking through the documents at local hall of records say the house might have been built in 1846.I do want to detect his property, BUt I want to be more proficient so I don't dig up his entire yard!
Any and all help would be greatly appreciated!

If you tilt the head, rather than keeping it flat and parallel to the ground, especially if you shift toward your major hand, it will change the reading.
Also, if the coin is on edge, or greatly slanted, it may read from one direction and not the other.
Your best bet is to join a detector club. Two hours with an old digger and you'll advance significantly. There are probably more detector clubs than there are coin clubs.
Keep hunting. Don't play with the buttons until you've mastered the basics.

The instructions on my detector say to keep the head parallel to the ground.

Keep getting out there until you get the hang of it . right now dig on every signal , once you master the machine you can adjust your settings . And it doesn't matter if your brother 's house is from 1846 or 1864 ,your going to find some nice stuff there .

I appreciate the info! I do try my best to keep the head parallel. I even switch arms to try and master both so I don't get to use to one swing. IS there a certain speed to sweep? To fast or to slow? Thanks again!

Something else which may help is that there are people making youtube videos explaining these same items mentioned in this thread. Just search for things like "how to properly use a metal detector."

Some detectors are meant to be swung fast, some slow. Which brand/model are you using?

Swing it 2 to 5 feet per second, per the manual instructions. If you don't have the manual, just do a quick online search.

Holy crap! That's pretty darn fast! Is this somewhat of a good model?
