According to Deyell, the economy of Kashmir was always isolated and under-monetized, even up to relatively modern times. The coins of Toramana II and later rulers had their place, supplemented by cowrie shells for small transactions. Large payments, such as the salaries of officials, were made in grain or by letters of exchange. The coinage of Toramana II, supplemented by sporadic minting posthumously by later rulers, seems to have sufficed until the kings of Kashmir began minting in their own names. Literary accounts testify that the Toramana coins were still in circulation as late as the 15th century! This is borne out by a number of hoards which contain the full range of puntshu issues from their 6th-century beginning through their 14th-century termination. Surprising? Not necessarily. The coins of the Sasanian king Peroz and the bull and horseman jitals were each imitated for far longer than 300 years elsewhere in India. Kashmir's moneyed economy was a closed system, unaffected by changes beyond its borders. As we used to say in the midwest, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it".

Thanks Bob! @KS...Interesting summary thanks...Do you know of any links related to hoard finds of this series? Here is the new reference chart of my collection...I've shrunk it down to only one coin per ruler and just the obverse with legend... Hope this is helpful...Paul  |

I think I might have already asked this, but: with 22 rulers now in the collection, how many are you still missing from a theoretical full ruler set of those types "from their 6th-century beginning through their 14th-century termination" (to quote Kushanshah's post), and do you expect to get coins from any of them this year?

As to whether I buy more this year will depend on availabilty and most importantly cost!...There are 2 rare rulers up for sale at the moment but at 300$ a shot they are well out of my budget.... What I will definitely try to do this year is upgrade some of the weaker coins and patiently wait until I stumble across one of the rare ones incorrectly attributed as always..Paul

As you know I have a lot more coins with different legend variants but I think this simplified reference chart will allow other collectors to attribute their own coins reasonably easily.....Paul

Upgrade on the Bhimagupta coin... As you can see from the legend detail photo the new coin has much clearer detail but has lost the'Gu'on the obverse. However it has gained the 'pta' on the reverse so I guess I'll just keep them both    Below shows the legend details..(What you lose form one you gain from another)  |

Nice looking coin. I guess if you collect enough off-center specimens of a particular emission, with each off-centered differently, you can eventually piece together what the entire die engraving might have looked like. In that sense, this series reminds me of the Gadhaiya paisas and other Indo-Sassanian AR's the Finn often shares with us. Some of those Eastern cultures really liked their tight flans and oversized dies, it seems.

Yeh exactly! I have a lot of these coins now especially the cheaper more common ones. I often think its time to downsize the set but I don't think this will ever happen. Every time I feel "ok time to sell some on"...I realise each individual coin is showing me something different and I just buy a bigger album |

I'm reminded of Russian wire money, personally - though it's even more of a problem with Indian princely state coins, where on many types the date is off flan more often than not. Of course, as far as ancient pre-modern coins go, dies too large for the flan are probably the rule rather than the exception (though, weirdly, they don't appear to have been particularly common in medieval Europe).

First  to the community... Phew some of these are quite far gone but I'll do my best.... Coin 2  Coins 1 and 3  Coin 4 I don't know too far gone for my eyes.. Coin 5 If I had to hazard a guess a Toramana II posthumous issue.. |
