A few weeks back, as I was ordering a 2016 Burnished Silver Eagle from the Mint (to pair with my proof coin), it suddenly hit me that the two edge-lettered 30th Anniversary ASEs were each struck by the West Point mint and carried the "W" mint mark. (Sometimes the obvious eludes me for a time, but I usually catch up!)

Like others, I was a bit surprised that the Mint didn't create a specially-packaged "30th Anniversary Set" similar to the sets they had produced in recent years.

Then I remembered that the Mint did create a special two-coin set for West Point Silver Eagles back in 2013 and that the set came with very nice packaging.

So, off to ebay I went and quickly found several sellers offering empty cases for the 2013 West Point Two-Coin Silver Set. A couple of clicks later, I had the makings of a custom OGP set on the way to my door!

I recognize that placing these edge-lettered coins into the cases does not have the same impact as when the two coins have different finishes, but I like the overall presentation (the Mint OGP is very nice) and it is very easy to pop the coins out and show folks the lettered edge. The two-coin case also makes it a touch easier to take the two anniversary ASEs "on the road" to my local coin club or to other events at which I display coins.

If you'd prefer to add an example of the 2016 non-lettered bullion coin to the set, you could always pick up an empty case for the 2006 ASE 20th Anniversary set and you'd be good to go!

A couple of pictures for your viewing pleasure...

Very nice commems! I have a bunch of 2012 & 2013 two coin cases, maybe I'll get them out and populate them with several years worth of proof & unc sets. Great idea.

I picked up a few extra cases that I plan on filling. The 2016 American Liberty silver medals fit nicely as do the 2011 September 11th silver medals.

Great idea, commems! I have a couple empty 2-coin OGPs as well. Might have to give your idea a go.

I, too, was a bit annoyed that for their 30th anniversary they did nothing special in comparison to the 20th and 25th anniversary.

Yes, edge lettering is interesting, but I'd have loved another Reverse Proof and/or Enhanced Finish. I suppose now that all types and varieties are now over the 100 mark I'm just being greedy.

However, ASE's are the only post 1964 U.S. coins I collect, and I should be happy with only 3 coins to add. I hope to goodness they never start the smarmy privy mark nonsense or something equally squirrelly.

Hmmm... where do you get 100? Are you talking every ASE variety issued for each year?

Apologies for the thread resurrection, but I thought it appropriate after commems mentioned it in the (very cool) OGP Photos thread.

I posted a couple years ago about reusing empty ASE 25th Anniversary OGP to house all the Morgan dollars released in 2021; photo below.

The only issue is that the Morgans are smaller in diameter than the ASEs so they are slightly loose in the OGP. Still working, 3 years later, on a solution to that.

Celtic,

First things First,

Why is it that in an Educational Forum, Like this one, It is considered by some to be Wrong or Rude to Re-visit an Older Posted Thread, ?

Educational information is Key to Knowledge, Especially From Days gone Bye, !!

That out of the way, I believe the Inventiveness of others to be Very interesting, Your 2021 MORGAN's displayed in the Grand Daddy of All ( ASE ) sets, The 2011 25TH Anniversary American Silver Eagles Sets 5-Coin OGP Display.

Also, You so Selectively placed the Sweet True 100TH Anniversary MORGAN's inside, WOW.......

Thanks for the View

Well Done Celtic !!!!

PS, I might add, If you've seen the Ribbons the U S Dis-Appoint-Mints use.
I would search for a Similar looking Sweet Red, White and Blue ribbon and cut a length to extend from Right to left in your display case Over the holes provided and that small expansion Just Might take up enough room to Snug up those Beauties, and Look Sweet Too.......

the Grand Daddy of All ( ASE ) sets

Well as long as this is an educational forum. You know my "status" of the ASE sets.
I would, shall I say "strongly argue" that the true "grandaddy" would have to be the 1993 Philadelphia Mint Bicentennial set. It was the first time an ASE was ever in a set, a couple years before the "10"th anniversary set (I use quote marks on the 10 because since when is 1995 the 10th anniversary of 1986?).
At any rate the Philly Bicentennial set is hard to find, under 13,000 sets made. The regular proof ASE (nothing unique about the ASE) plus 3 gold AGEs. No 1oz, but has the 1/2 oz, 1/4 oz and 1/10th oz. Hard to find one that isn't toned, and it's always an ugly blackish-purpleish tone.

Yeah, I know some people prefer a new topic, but I agree, in general I don't see an issue revisiting an old topic like this if the subject matter is in line with the OP.

Great idea! Thank you, MD! Jo-Ann Fabrics, here I come. "Sir, um, you only want 2 feet of this ribbon?"

From a chronological perspective, you are of course correct. Otherwise, it is of course subject to opinion. The 5-coin set for me is very special but I understand your arguments too. I also enjoy the 10th anniversary set.

Cheers!
