Hello. I was hoping I could get some advice about metal detectors.
Is there any model that has wheels? Holding something heavy and waving it back and forth in a sweeping motion has got to be difficult for those with back issues. If there are none with wheels, are there any that are not too heavy?
Other than the detector itself, what other items are necessary and/or recommended? I have heard of something called a "pinpointer". Is that important?
What model(s) would you recommend for new hobbyists? How long is common before the basic devices are outgrown and traded in for a more expensive variety? Are used models usually a safe purchase?
Are there any detectors that are good for transporting when traveling on airplanes?
Are there clubs where newbies can try out a detector? Are there companies that rent them?
Thanks

There are places that rent metal detectors. I would do that before I buy one. Who knows? You may not like the hobby after walking around in the heat all day.

Also, where are you going to be engaging in this activity? Are you going to be on the beach, forest, or somewhere else? That also factors into which metal detector you need to rent or purchase.

I have several thousand dollars wrapped up in equipment - several detectors, trowels, multiple headphones, pinpointers, etc.
You don't have to spend that much. You can call a rental business to see if they have one to try.

Basic equipment would include a digging tool, pinpointer, finds pouch, headphones (not a must, but for privacy and to save battery life). My favorite detector is over 12 years old and uses FBS technology. I have dug hundreds of silver and old coins and relics.

I don't detect in the heat much, I don't enjoy the southern Michigan summers when the temps hit the 80's-90's, so I get out in the spring and fall. My detector when equipped with 10x12" search coil can become quite heavy after a while, so I use the (Minelab) Pro-swing harness, which makes the machine light as a feather. I don't belive one can find a detector with wheels, but you may want to research that.

Joining a club would be a great idea. I would suggest buying a used machine to save $. The Garrett AT Pro gets great reviews and it is fully submersible. You might find one used for around $400. Otherwise, their 'little yeller feller' Ace line might be a good choice also.

Thank you for your suggestions.

I was thinking that places I could detect without problems would be private property, and I have several friends who are homeowners in different states. That would be suburban terrain. I was thinking by starting on private property, I could test out the hobby without risking legal complications until I learn the laws about searching.

If I found a detector that can be brought along when visiting, it would broaden my search options. That harness sounds like an interesting idea until someone invents attachable wheels. I've notice how the appropriate camera bags/supports make a major difference in how much equipment I can carry when I take my camera out for a walk.

Apparently I do live near a club that has an active website. I'll go check them out when I can. Maybe some of the members would let me hold their detectors for a few minutes to see how heavy they are. Maybe they'll have something set up where they'll let a newbie take a turn if they help carry things...

Thanks!

My back is weak, had a hip replaced 12 years ago, and a knee in 2014, metal detecting has strenghten my back and it is excellent excercise for me. When I started in January 2014, 30 minutes at lunch was a stretch for my physically. Now I can do 4 hours or more in 80-90 degree afternoons. It is a lot of up dpwn up down up down, I was digging 80% of my good signals, just bought a Garrett AT Pro this month and still a lot of up down, but a lot less trash do I dig. I started with the Garrett Ace 350, the Ace 400 would be a great machine, or get the AT Pro with a sniper coil, smaller and lighter. Just some thoughts. Webekin
