The city has kicked the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society out of the Old Mint building. The group hadn't been meeting the milestones.

My question is what happened the $5 million in surcharges raised from the commemorative coins issued in 2006?

It's unfortunate that the efforts of the San Francisco Museum and Historical Society to restore the Old Mint building were not fully successful - they did make some headway, however. My understanding is that their overall fundraising efforts did not bring in enough to get the full job done - even after they scaled down their original "full restoration" plans.

In the overall picture, the surcharges from the coins - though significant - represented only a minor contribution to the overall amount needed. At this point, eights years later, the coin funds have very likely been used to cover expenses for the work the Society did accomplish.

The Society is not going away (at least not at the moment), so maybe it will be able to re-invigorate itself and be in a position to play a role in the Old Mint's revitalization at some point in the future.

Hopefully they can get back on track. Would be a shame if they were ultimately unsuccessful.
