Hey, nice article in the CN Journal! Glad to see you submitted it.

Commens: you must have an absolutely stunning collection! I have both the 2007 & 2010 enamel dollars. I need to save up and hunt for the other two. The 2005 enamel flag can still be a pricy coin. My Arizona friend has a very interesting enamel flag graded coin, the Maple Leaf is enamelled but the sides aren't. It's a very interesting error coin. Sorry for my error, just caught it, it's a very unusual coin. My 2010& 2007 enamel dollars are both NGC pr69. I've also got the graded versions and a graded 2002. It's what happens when you're mentored by a true collector!! Your collection grows in ways, you never intended or knew about.

It's nice to hear you wrote for the journal. I guess it's my next step, to join the two Canadian organizations. I love these historic posts. I still have many silver to get in order to complete my collection.

@pocket_change_50: I encourage you to join the Royal Canadian Numismatic Association. The RCNA puts out a terrific Journal throughout the year - it's filled with articles on many areas of Canadian numismatics (along with occasional articles of coins/medals/tokens from other countries). I'd be happy to sponsor your membership - PM me if you're interested.

Regarding my Canadian collection, I do certainly find pleasure in it. For the most part, I collect Canada's commemorative silver dollars from 1935 to the present. I also add modern RCM NCLT pieces of other denominations that catch my attention, mostly when they intertwine the history of Canada and the US. The recent RCM releases for the War of 1812 are a good example of such coins. My collection is not as extensive as that of some here on CCF, but I do enjoy the stories behind the coins I collect and learning about the Canadian history they represent.

I've only visited Canada a few times in person, but I "visit" it via my coins on a regular basis!

I will PM you and take you up on your most generous offer! I'm thinking of your entire collection. From time to time I read the other sections of the forum. I have a wide interest in coins in general and like to learn about other countries coins. Currently I can only afford to pursue Canadian coins. The other reason I more confident I can recognize a fake since I'm more familiar with them. I do occasionally add silver circulation coins from other countries. I'd love to start collecting the classic US Commemeratives, those will have to wait until my kid is through university. He's just turning 15 on Tuesday. I affectionately call him the money pit. He and coins eat up the majority of my money. Kid got expensive tastes in coins. Our first coin show, he picks out a 1936 monster toned dollar priced $185. He then proceeds to trade 2 $10 superman coins, a friend had picked up for me a month or so earlier. I think I just had a peak at the superman coins before they traded ownership. Well I'm giving him the coin for his birthday. It's being sent to NGC for grading and preserving. At least the coin stays in the family. So once he's launched, the US commens will need to wait, as they can be pretty pricy coins. Plus I will also need to learn more about them. I find it interesting that in the thirties the US had the same problems we now face with over population of Nclt coins. Now those coins eighty yrs later are in demand!

Not until he fully appreciates exactly what this is, and properly identify all the Canadiana in this:

One free hint - they are wearing "toques"

SPP Ottawa latter tell us where you found that item. I'm laughing so hard I'm in tears! A very interesting token, if that's what it is. They bring back fond memories. Even my fifteen yr old knows this. It's totally hilarious and I want one. There should be one in ever Candians Christmas stocking. Great post and when did you become a moderator? I thought that was a solely US position.

Not sure how I'm going to do on this one, but here goes!

That's Rick Moranis (left) and Dave Thomas in a skit they used to do on SCTV - I remember seeing them years ago on late night TV here in the US. I think they were supposed to be brothers who hosted a TV show? Was one of them named "Bob"?

I think "touque" refers to the caps they are both wearing.

I'm thinking the snow shoes and winter coats tie into the "Great White North" theme and the beer refers to all of Canada's great national beers?

How did I do, eh?

I love rereading this thread when I stumble across it! The silver dollars are full of history, too bad the RCM doesn't print the stories with each coin anymore! I had learned so much from those stories on the coa. this new enameled 2015 dollar should compliment the above coins very well. I'm still searching for the 2004 flag & 2006 coins. I must say I enjoy my silver dollars the most. I still have a way to go before my collection is complete. I'm amazed that the issue price were so high for coins under an ounce, and way back several years ago. does anyone know how many nclt silver dollars are in total.
Commems I always enjoy your write ups on the coins. Learning more about the history adds to their value and enjoyment! This is a very useful thread for the silver dollar collector. I especially like the photos, it be great if more photos were added. my favorite is the 2007 enamel coin, the colors just pop for me.
What is the difference between pad printing, painted and enamel coins. Sorry my question key isn't working. I've heard these terms, however not sure what the are. It would be great to have an explaination with photos for comparison!!

I will try to reply with simple examples, and later, for sure some knowledgeable folks will detail:

As I understand - the "pad printing" this is one of the colorization methods. It used, when the coin has a flat surface, and on that flat surface, the picture should be applied. I think, the example will be - all Hockey 50c and loonies where the team logo appears on the coin.

"Painted" - the coin has been struck with some relief, and some elements were colorized. "Autumn Bliss", "Nanaboozoo" (?)

"Enamel" - well, this is most visible distinguished from others. Imagine coin with some incuse relief elements (relief goes down the coin surface), and these elements "filled up" with "oily-liquid-paint". The colours not mixed and have a clear border.
"Lakes" and the "Masks" - the best visible examples, cause there the enamel is transparent.
