If it's copper plated zinc, then what you are seeing could be artifacts of the plating bath. Plating lines are often seen in parallel.

You can scratch my name off the list, my wife said an envelope from the US had arrived. I cannot post photos, as I am travelling. Looking forward to opening the envelope when I get home in February.

Not clips per se, "ragged fissure" is the proper term. Those are made prior to the punching of the blanks, and are probably from improperly annealed bronze, with stress related fissure tears in the metal from the rolling of the strips.

The term "rim fin" means it is attached to the rim, and raised. I use the term "rim burr" to describe the arcuate fragments that get sheared off by the collar die.

That said, I digress, nice catch!

Would that be with using large cents?

I'm a little bit late to the conversation but here is my take. If you immerse a copper-plated steel penny in an ammonia solution, the copper will dissolve but the steel won't. I've included pictures showing the results. This works much better than an acid bath which could affect the steel as well as the copper.

Impressive how it appears to have lustre even after the bath. I'd love one of those for teaching purposes, if you ever want to make another one.

Bucsfan - sounds like you should have a chat with Mike Marshall. Mike has been leading the fight against Canadian counterfeit coins since the mid-2000s.

I think you both would enjoy a conversation on this topic.

Not to an error collector. It is definitely a legit strike through error. I'd buy that in a heartbeat if I saw it on eBay or at a coin show.

Not a Type 4, it is a Type 3 (Large Beads, Blunt 5). It is a strike through error.

Effect on value?

Significant, a normal BU Type 3 1965 is worth about 25-cents (or less), but that is easily a CAN$20 error in my opinion. Possibly more, if two guys want to fight over it in an auction.

More information on this, and older versions dating back to early 2000s, are in the back of the 72nd edition Charlton Catalogue (2019).

Apples and oranges Bill. This post was never about the 1936 Pittman specimen dot coins. This is about potential hub doubling while sinking the reverse die.

Chad - have you thought about reaching out to Ken Potter directly?

Zimmy, considering that the US probably strikes an order of magnitude more coins in each denomination more than Canada, the probability is a lot higher for a greater population of errors.

There are some crazy cool errors I see in US coins, that I can only dream of for a Canadian counterpart.

2004 and 2005 CPZ 1c coins are probably the most common modern dates to see cool errors. The zinc is pretty soft and malleable, and allows for some spectacular rim finning.

Equally impressive that it circulated. Good catch.

This is a legit error, the proper terminology is "struck on an incomplete punched planchet". There are lots of examples in this Canadian sub-forum.
