My father has been dead for almost 15 years now and I just recently found this kicking around in an old cigar box. I don't think he thought it was silver. Otherwise he would have taken better care of it. The edges of the coin are a bit banged up.

Thanks! It makes me wonder when my father got it. His childhood was in Slovenia and his village was occupied by the Germans so that's a possibility. After coming to the US he got his citizenship through the military and was stationed in West Germany for a time.

I agree that's a fine memento of your dad, and some historical event in his life.

My guess is that it came from his miltary service in Germany. Many U.S. GIs who served there in World War II or its aftermath brought coins back with them. Though that one would not have been in circulation, it's not too hard to imagine his picking it up at a flea market, or similar venue.
