Excellent Morgan find, Docc! And WOW - that watch is unbelievable! You should check back issues of the local paper to see if the heartbroken former owner placed an ad.
Inordinately fascinated by bits of metal with strange markings and figures

It is absolutely stunning - so happy for him. Here is the kicker. After he did a delicate clean, his wife wound it up and it worked - after a 100++ years. Be a great marketing storyline.
That is good call Hondo, somebody sure missed that piece.

Quote: Who is the maker of the watch? The movement is Elgin Watch Co - Chicago. Serial # confirms 1899. The encasement/seller is Dueber (Swiss). Serial # on housing also comes back 1899.

I love Elgin watches. I carried one in my pocket for many years with a 105 year old movement, and it kept time perfectly. Elgin really cracked the code on mass manufactured watches that were reasonably priced and high quality. Truly an American legend.

Beautiful! And the engraving is very nice. Is the chain also gold?

Quote: Is the chain also gold? We assume so. Certainly heavy enough, non-magnetic, and with a VDI readout in the high-teens (indicative of gold), it does not appear to be simply plated. He is going to take it in for an "under the glass" cleanse and appraisal. Best guess is value of 3-5k.

Beautiful watch. How far below the surface was it?

Quote: How far below the surface was it? Relatively shallow - 3-4 inches. It is a unique area with minimal overburden.
