Well that seems to be very purposeful defacement. I wonder if it was a circulating counterfeit that someone wanted to make sure no one else would accept. Can you confirm the allow, for example through specific density testing?

It passes the ping test as silver 90%. I have no doubt its real, the details for these empire coins I am familiar with.

Ok good to know. They don't look like test cuts used to assess if a coin was plated/fourree.
I suspect that the reason for this defacement is lost to the sands of time then. Sorry that I couldn't be more helpful--perhaps someone else will weigh in on this thread in the days to come.

The white stuff around the edge on the reverse looks like old enamelling. In which case, the "front" of the enamelled piece is the reverse, and the "back" would have been the side with the king's portrait. In which case, the "cuts" on the rim and obverse may be the remnants of attaching (and later removing) the item to a piece of jewellery or something else.

You are absolutely correct.. now the rim holes make sense, there were a frame going inside them

The Franco Prussian war resulted in a lot of unhappy people in France. Think of all the Napoleon III satirical pieces that were issued after the war. This mutilated coin is the next level of : "I hate you Prussian King Wilhelm ". The obliterated edge was the religious "Gott Mit Uns" or God with us. A really neat item!!
