A previously introduced bill, H.R. 6751, as of Oct. 14, was 23 co-sponsors short of the necessary 290 to move the bill further along in the legislative process. It seeks a three-coin commemorative coin program for 2027 to recognize the humanitarian and philanthropic contributions of the late Major League Baseball Hall of Famer Roberto Clemente.

The legislation seeking the Clemente commemorative coins was originally introduced in the House on Dec. 13, 2023, by Rep. Adriano Espaillat, D-New York, and referred to the House Committee on Financial Services.

In addition to his baseball prowess, Clemente was also notable for his charity work during the off-season from baseball.

Clemente died Dec. 31, 1972, at age 38 in a plane crash during emergency relief efforts from Puerto Rico to Managua, Nicaragua, where a devastating earthquake eight days earlier had killed 5,000 people.

Espaillat's legislation seeks the production and sale by the United States Mint, in Proof and Uncirculated versions, of up to 50,000 $5 gold coins, 400,000 silver dollars and 750,000 copper-nickel clad half dollars.

Net surcharges after the U.S. Mint recoups all production and associated costs would be "paid to the Roberto Clemente Foundation for application to general expenses associated with the fulfillment of the mission of the Roberto Clemente Foundation including for costs associated with educational, youth sports, and disaster relief historic preservation."

He is well-remembered among baseball fans! In fact, Major League Baseball has named one of its sought-after annual awards in his honor - The Roberto Clemente Award.

Per Major League Bseball:

"The Roberto Clemente Award is bestowed annually to the player who best represents the game of Baseball through extraordinary character, community involvement, philanthropy and positive contributions, both on and off the field."

I believe his memory is lasting!

Would a suite of Clemente commemoratives fare as well as the 1997 Jackie Robinson issues ? Here's the stats:

I would be a buyer of an UNC dollar. . .

I would love to buy a silver dollar and medal set.

The medal, of course, being a silver strike of the 1973 Roberto Clemente National Commemorative Medal.

I'm not even a fan of professional sports anymore - it is just way too commercialized, and not to place them on coins? Thanks for shoving that down my throat you mint folks..

I wouldn't be surprized if all the games are all 'pre-ordained'

A few years ago the Arizona Cardinals played lousy all season on purpose in order to get first pick for the next year..

While I've no issue with commemorating sports stars and/or philanthropists on coins, I am curious about the chosen date, 2027. It doesn't seem to mark any significant anniversary or milestone from his life. Why 2027, and not (for example) 2034, the centenary of his birth? Or 2022, the 50th anniversary of his tragic death?

For me, a commemorative coin ought to actually "commemorate" something, other than "this guy existed, once".

2027 marks the 25th Anniversary of Major League Baseball (MLB) creating its annual Roberto Clemente Day - a significant event in MLB history. It's one of just three such days (i.e., a specific day that honors a past Major Leaguer / individual) on the MLB schedule each year (Lou Gehrig Day and Jackie Robinson Day are the others).
