Hello everyone,

I have an 1887 florin in good overall shape. On closer inspection, the obverse in the word 'Victoria' appeared slightly thicker. Under a loupe it looks like possible doubling. I can't find anything online with reference to any varieties for this so thought I'd post here for opinion. Thanks for your help.

Looks legit to me--those serifs are clearly doubled.

Thanks for the replies. Tough to find much information on UK varieties, doesn't seem to be much interest in them.

@FTJR Hi Bud It is rarer for UK coins to not have doubling . So many coins were repaired or received several blows to make an impression literally 50% of the coinage from Charles II through to Victoria have the same appearance. So it isn't a rarity for us. But Overdates and Blundered letter strikes like B/R or F/E those kind of varieties are extremely sort after as most of them are extremely rare.

It is also a fact that for the most part Doubled Die coins just hold no premium in UK coinage unlike the US - Can - Australia. Along with Die cracks. It's just a part of our coinage by default . However where the rest of the world doesn't put much weight in die chips lumps and bumps the UK has some high premium coins with the so called raised stop error. Many theories behind their existence but because of the familiar local of them the train of thought were that they were purpose made to check for die wear on some coins as the dies had very short lives.
