I'm spending a week in Scotland later this year and I really enjoy connecting physical locations + numismatic history + something to collect.

I've done a few hours of research into the smaller towns, but have not come up with anything still standing.

What I'm looking for help from the group is; does anyone know if there are any existing structures/locations connected to the minting of coins in Scotland? The wiki page makes it seem like everything was destroyed and disposed of, but I just wanted to do due diligence before missing something I could visit while I'm in the area.

Thanks

@dan, first welcome to CCF. Second, there is a thread here dedicated to numismatic museums and displays around the world. Here is a link--you'll have to tab through to find posts specifically related to Scotland, but I did note early on in that thread that the National Museum of Scotland in Edinburgh has quite a bit of for the avid numismatist.

The mint in Aberdeen was in a street named Mint St, now under the St Nicholas Shopping Centre.

Lord Stewartby conjectured that if there was a mint in Jedburgh, it was in the abbey - the abbey is now a ruin but can be visited.

Roxburgh mint may have been in the castle. It's now a ruin but may be visited with care, though when I last visited, the access paths were waist deep in nettles.

You mentioned a Wiki article; was that https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mints_of_Scotland?

@pert. Yes that is the wiki I have been referencing as a starting point.

The details that you mention on those three mints is exactly the type of information I am attempting to hunt down. I really appreciate it.

@spence. Thanks for the link and suggestion on where to look in the forum. I appreciate the nudge!

Stirling mint was inside Stirling castle.

See https://canmore.org.uk/site/142492/...-castle-mint

In Forres, there's Old Mint Rd, just near Castle Road, and so I conjecture that's where the mint was.

Not sure how credible this site is, but they seem to claim most of these mints are just temporary pop-up mints that simply coined while the king was in town, and then closed shop until the king arrived again. That would explain why there isn't too much existing structure to visit. that and being 800 years ago :P
