I'm ready to put down for a detector and have read good things about the Garret AT Pro and their "carrot" pointer. Does it matter where you buy one? Amazon, ebay, other website, or brick and mortar? Also, if there are any "cons" with this detector please let me know and advise. Thanks.

Hi EDM
Both the AT Pro and the 'carrot' are proven good products from Garrett, so your choices are sound.
If you are shopping for a good deal, looking around is not a bad idea, you may find a deal out there.
If I was going to jump into detecting, these are some factors I might consider...Amazon/Ebay may not offer 'bundle' deals where as a detector dealer may. A dealer will offer knowledge or advice with operation of your purchases where Amazon or ebay surely won't. A purchase in person let's you try before you buy option where mail/ delivery does not. A good and easy return policy is always a factor to consider in case things go that way.
These products like many are mass produced and there are lots out there in the marketplace, used equipment can just as reliable as new and come deeply discounted from retail prices, so that is also an option, but you may be stuck with somebody's old headache , so consider that as well.
Whichever way you go, and detecting proves to be an activity you become involved in, I'm certain you will find it rewarding and will give you lots more options of adding to your coin collecting because it has for me.
Goodluck out there..theres plenty of stuff just waiting for you to find it!

Hi EDM,

Ironhorse has made some good points. My first detector was a Garrett Ace. I purchased it second hand but near new off ebay at half retail price from a teenager who had bought it thinking he was going to earn big bucks (watched too many YouTube videos I suspect). I later on upgraded when I got more into the hobby but my Dad now uses it and it hasn't missed a beat in 3-4 years which says a lot about the brand. I originally used a cheap Chinese Garrett knock off pointer that did the job enough to see if I was going to continue. I now use a NOX 800 detector with a Nokta pulse dive/pointer. With this set up I can do land based detecting plus use the pulse dive for snorkeling. Point is, you don't have to buy the same brand pointer as detector. Like the Nox 800, the AT Pro is also waterproof to 3m however I wouldn't use them for full underwater detecting. I know of several cases of water ingress with the Nox 800 and yes, Minelab did honour the warranty but it still meant down time for the owners. It does enable you to detect in the rain and provides peace of mind when detecting in the surf etc in case you drop it but I'd go with a unit designed for underwater use if I was getting into proper underwater detecting.

Good luck detecting with your new unit, whatever you decide on!
