We call them nickels because that's what they are made of. Nickel. If they were made of silver we would probably call them silvers. |

Is there a website available listing the various varieties/mint errors for modern coins? I realize there are all kinds of minor mistakes as in clips, cuds, die deterioration errors, but I'm talking about the actual varieties such as DDO, DDR, etc. The reason I ask is because most on-line coin listings list so few actual varieties such as the "close AM" or "wide AM" LMC, yet most of our questions here seem to be "wishful thinking" of imaginary errors. I'd like to know what I'm looking for. |

Question On Design Of Buffalo Nickel And Standing Liberty Quarter

Were the Buffalo Nickel and Standing Liberty Quarter specifically designed so that their mint year wore out unreadable quickly to thwart collectors or was this simply a factor of their overuse during the Great Depression? Or, just bad design? Did the Treasury Department/Mint ever comment on this? I know that the 1913 Buffalo Nickel design on the reverse was immediately changed to help prevent "Five Cents" from wearing off first, and the 1917 SLQ design was changed, some say "to cover a nude breast", but the reverse was changed as well. These seem to indicate poor design from the beginning. |

1921 are going for a huge premium right now. If it was me, I'd hold onto them as a "stack" investment for the future. They are not going to lose value as higher inflation sets in. People invest in silver as a hedge. We don't know what the future holds. |

It's my understanding that the 1922 and 1923 Peace Dollars do not carry much of a premium above spot silver value unless they are of superior uncirculated quality, and even then they rate lower than all the other dates. Is that a fair statement? As is, 1700 of these coins represents a decent "stack" of silver investment which may gain considerable value in the future. The 1923 in the photo looks like it has 2 die chips near the date. |

The scratches on the obverse are superficial "hairline" scratches which look worse in the photo than in hand, and changing angle they virtually disappear. The reverse side has 2 dings which look like they came from contact with another coin or two, typical of business strike coins. |

I removed that 1970-S small date LMC from the mint packaging and soaked it for a couple of hours in acetone. (It was kind of hazy.) It cleaned up pretty well I think. Of course, what is revealed is some light scratches and dings, perhaps some die polishing marks, and the diagnostic weak strike of "LIBERTY". Average quality from an uncirculated mint set?
