Sel - very interesting points. I did some extra research and found a lot of good materials to read.

NSW gold rush. Some old photos from Sydney Mint

The History and Collectability of British and Australian Gold Sovereign Coins

Sydney Mint
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sydney_Mint
News article about Sydney Mint's assayer (William Jevons)
https://www.smh.com.au/national/tal...-gdngzq.html
What stumped me is the following. Sydney Mint was a branch of The Royal Mint - all the technology and even the assayer would have been British. How was this issue not raised during the first few years of operation in Sydney? Perhaps the gold-silver vs gold-copper impure alloy may have played a role. Any metallurgist in the forum?
Some extra reading if you are into minerals

Geoscience Australia - Antimony

Hillgrove

I'm speculating that this gold may have originated from Hillgrove. Timing can't be that much closer. Would be interesting if there is scientific study on this!
