I will soon take delivery of a Roman gold coin and would like it graded. I am in Australia and have used Imperial Coins in the past for much lower value coins, but it looks like PCGS does not grade and verify ancients.

Which agent in Australia should I send my coin to? Which grading company should I use?

I know NGC grades ancients, and I can probably send my coin direct to the USA, but as soon as I try to make an honest Customs form declaration I get a warning from Australia Post that the item is forbidden. Checking Fedex, DHL, and other courier companies, they forbid the transport of gold coins as well.

I once asked a local coin dealer in Australia how people get gold and silver coins to the USA for grading. He just smiled and said "everybody lies" on the Customs declaration.

So, I'd prefer to send the coin to a local agent and let them deal with all the legal hassles.

Thanks,

Yes, NGC is a good company to grade anceint coins. Import/export restrictions have been increasing. It depends on the country of origin and how the package is labeled. Usually small packages, single coins are not examined very often, it's large lots of mulitple coins and large antiquities that may get stopped at customs. I never had any problems recieving an ancient coin sent to USA from Europe, except one got lost in the mail years ago.

You could post photos of the coin here on CCF, get opinions if the coin is worth grading.

Thank you for your feedback livingwater.

I will probably go with NGC as looking on ebay, most expensive ancient coins are graded by them.

I am still waiting for the coin to be delivered to me. The auction house in Australia is rather slow. I paid them a week ago and still haven't even received a tracking number.
