The gouge is from tree trunk to end of branch marked with red arrows.

Yes I see what your asking about. Here is a 2007 penny I found last year and see how the branch never got cut by the wire in the strike but its there. The over strike will hide it sometimes. I see it in your coin!! I bet your branch is the same as my branch.

I have three of these and someone else has two. Damage is to the die, not the coin.

Yes I also looked at many 1968 dollars and never seen that, I would have caught it.
